RAY SITTER
Raymond Lawrence Sitter “Ray” passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, at Fairview Home, after having been diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Ray was born on a farm near Odessa, SK. After graduating from Odessa High School, he attended Teacher’s College in Regina, SK. He then taught in country schools in Saskatchewan until going to the University of Saskatchewan to take engineering. He taught school in rural Saskatchewan for one year and then attended university until he graduated with an Electrical Engineering Degree. In 1969 he moved to Manitoba, teaching in Emerson and Dominion City. He then obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education. In 1978, he received his Master's Degree in Education at the University of Manitoba. He then moved to Brandon and was Vice Principal at Crocus Plains High School until his retirement.
In retirement, Ray was an active member of the Retired Teachers Associations. He supervised student teachers, was a volunteer driver with the Cancer Society, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Brandon Community Builders. He enjoyed his annual seed trip for Lindenbergs to southern Saskatchewan.
Ray and Barb delivered Meals on Wheels, were Tourist Greeters and helped at Christmas dinners. Once he was convinced to start square dancing, he enjoyed the dancing, the friendship, and Ray and Barb were newsletter editors and on the square dance executive.
Ray is survived by his wife Barbara; children Richard (Karen) in Toronto, Debra Draper in Brandon, Greg (Tara) Draper in Calgary; grandchildren Chris Desormeau (Alycia), Scott Desormeau, Cydney and Holly Draper; great-granddaughters Maddy and Izzy Desormeau; brothers Bert (Elsie) Sitter and Ron (Doreen) Sitter; brother-in-law Bill (Donna) Preston and sister-in-law Diane (Morley) Henderson. He was predeceased by his first wife Anne Shulhan.
A private family interment will take place at Brandon Cemetery. A Come and Go Reception for family and friends will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 – 18th Street North, Brandon on Friday, May 19, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Donations in memory of Ray may be made to the Riverbank Discovery Centre, 545 Conservation Dr, Brandon, MB R7A 7L8, or a charity of your choice.
