L’abbé Léo Couture, prêtre de l’Archidiocèse de Saint-Boniface, est décédé paisiblement le jeudi 11 mai 2023 à Actionmarguerite Saint-Vital, à l’âge de 92 ans.
Il laisse dans le deuil plusieurs cousins entre autres, André et Jeannette Couture et famille, ainsi que de nombreux amis spécialement Raymond et Sharon Mueller, amis de longue date.
Léo a été précédé dans la mort par ses parents Paul et Thérèse (née Balez). Léo était fils unique.
Léo est né à Saint-Boniface le 30 avril 1931. Il a fait ses études primaires à l’école Provencher et ses études classiques chez les Jésuites au Collège de Saint-Boniface. Il a complété sa première année de théologie au Grand Séminaire de Saint-Boniface et a poursuivi ses études académiques au Grand Séminaire de Laval à Québec où il obtint son Baccalauréat et sa License en théologie.
Léo a été ordonné prêtre par Mgr Maurice Baudoux, archevêque de Saint-Boniface, le 3 juin 1956 en la Cathédrale de Saint-Boniface. Au cours de ses 67 ans de prêtrise, il a été au service de l’archidiocèse en ministère actif pendant presque 63 ans jusqu’à ce que la maladie l’afflige. Il a servi avec joie et dévouement et a toujours accepté fidèlement les postes qu’on lui confiait.
Depuis son ordination sacerdotale, Léo a été secrétaire de l’Archevêque, chancelier du diocèse, curé de la paroisse de St. Norbert, curé de la Cathédrale pendant 14 ans (1972-1986), et vicaire judiciaire au tribunal matrimonial diocésain tout en desservant plusieurs paroisses rurales comme prêtre dominical, notamment à la paroisse Christ Our Saviour à Steinbach (1998 à 2009). Il a aussi été aumônier de la maison provinciale des Soeurs Grises et du foyer Actionmarguerite Saint-Boniface. Durant toutes ses années au service de l’Archidiocèse, il a siégé à de nombreux comités diocésains et a servi d’aumônier à plusieurs groupes.
A l’occasion de son 60e anniversaire de prêtrise, l’abbé Léo disait « que l’essentiel était d’être à l’écoute avec les oreilles mais surtout avec le coeur et de répandre la joie ».
Au cours des dernières années, il a résidé à l’Archevêché pendant au-delà d’un an, puis deux ans à Actionmarguerite Saint-Vital. Un merci sincère au personnel de l’Archevêché et aux confrères prêtres qui ont démontré attention et soutien à son égard et au personnel d’Actionmarguerite pour leur attention et patience en lui fournissant les soins plus spécialisés dont il avait besoin.
La messe des funérailles, présidée par l’Archevêque Albert LeGatt, sera célébrée le samedi 20 mai 2023 à 10h00, avec témoignages à 9h30, en la Cathédrale de Saint-Boniface. L’inhumation au cimetière de la Cathédrale suivra.

FATHER LEO COUTURE
April 30, 1931 - May 11, 2023
Father Léo Couture, priest of the Archdiocese of Saint-Boniface, passed away peacefully with his dear friend Raymond by his side on Thursday May 11, 2023, at Actionmarguerite Saint-Vital at the age of 92.
He will be sadly missed by his many cousins especially André and Jeannette Couture and family as well as many friends, particularly Raymond and Sharon Mueller, longtime friends.
Léo was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Thérèse (née Balez). Léo was an only child.
Léo was born in Saint-Boniface on April 30, 1931. He attended Provencher School and then Saint Boniface College where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts. He completed his first year of theology at the Major Seminary in Saint-Boniface and went on to complete his education at the Major Seminary of Laval in Québec where he obtained his Bachelor and License in theology.
Léo was ordained to the priesthood on June 3, 1956, by Archbishop Maurice Baudoux in the Saint-Boniface Cathedral. During his 67 years of priesthood, he was in active ministry for almost 63 years until illness afflicted him. He served with joy and dedication and faithfully accepted the various positions assigned to him.
Since his ordination, Léo served as secretary to the Archbishop, diocesan chancellor, pastor of St. Norbert parish, pastor at the Saint-Boniface Cathedral for 14 years (1972 to 1986), judicial vicar for the diocesan Marriage Tribunal while ministering as Sunday pastor to many rural parishes including Christ Our Savior parish in Steinbach (1998 – 2009). He was also chaplain of the Grey Nuns Provincial House in Saint-Boniface and Actionmarguerite Saint-Boniface. He served the Archdiocese as a member of many committees and as chaplain of many Catholic organizations.
When he celebrated his 60 years of priesthood, he was quoted saying “One must listen with his ears but especially with his heart and spread joy.”
In his last years, he resided at the Archbishop’s House for a little more than a year and then for two years at Actionmarguerite Saint-Vital. A sincere thank-you to the staff of the Archbishop’s House and to his fellow priests who provided special attention and support to him and to the personnel at Actionmarguerite Saint-Vital for their kindness and patience in providing him the special care he required.
The funeral mass, presided by Archbishop Albert LeGatt, will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., with eulogy at 9:30 a.m., at the Saint-Boniface Cathedral. Interment to follow in the Cathedral cemetery.

My brother, Glenn Martens , met father Leo through Gord Self, while both students at U of Winnipeg, ....40 plus years ago. Father Leo did counselling with them once weekly over a cup of coffee. My parents, Walter and Helen Martens, Met Leo , through Glenn and they all became friends. Leo would visit them in Pompano Beach , Florida. For their 50 th wedding anniversary, Leo had their marriage blessed. They so appreciated that Leo celebrated my moms death, with a mass at St. Benedict’s monastery in 2015. He was the Highlight of my life when my husband was in the personal home on Nova Vista Lodge. I attended the mass every Saturday morning. He became my helper. My sick husband was so happy that he was able to go to mass. He served for his funeral four years ago. He contact me to see how I was doing and few times. On behalf I will say my sister was also so thankful for a funeral service he gave in the Steinbach catholic church for my sisters's sister in law... He spoke French and English. The Husband was German, and his passing wife was French. What a beautiful service he gave to all families. He was loved.
