LES GALATIUK

It is with great sadness and sorrow that the family of Les Galatiuk announce his sudden passing on May 15, 2023 at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.

Les was born on September 24, 1959 in Russell. He was the fifth child of Neil and Vickie Galatiuk.

His years of education included schools in Russell, Inglis and Roblin. While in high school Les was very active in many sports including basketball, track and field and pole vaulting. He achieved a provincial championship in pole vaulting, as well as many other sports awards.

After high school, he worked in the smelter at Flin Flon. It was in Flin Flon that he developed his interest in trains, and began his training with CNR as a locomotive engineer. Les was well known for his expertise and ability to be a very successful engineer for 35 years.

Being outdoors was Les’ most enjoyable times with many hours spent golfing and fishing, and fishing derbies. Caring for cattle and the farm came as second nature to him. He worked tirelessly maintaining the farm to its fullest potential. He was always there to help our Mom with anything and everything. He was her right-hand man. The farm was home for Les until his passing.

Uncle Les always had a great love for and interest in his nieces and nephews and the great nieces and nephews. Whenever Les and the kids were together, they were sure to have a great time! They always looked forward to his visits and fun times. Les had an unforgettable and wonderful sense of humor that kept his family and friends very entertained at all gatherings.

Les will be remembered for his caring of others less fortunate than himself. He willingly and quietly helped many people who were in need. He had a caring and gentle soul that was sometimes hidden by his tough appearance.

Les will be lovingly remembered by: Arch (Sharon) Galatiuk, Annie (Jim) Mitchell, Reg (Shirley) Galatiuk, Brad (Maricela) Galatiuk, Jackie (Darin) Becker; nieces and nephews, Lori (Benno), Mark (Marta), Rob (Trisha), Whitney (Sean), Jamie (Jenn), Jeff (Tobi), Cheri (Tyler), Danny (Pam), Chelsea (Aaron), Steven (Kara) and Brendyn (Donovan); and many great-nieces and nephews; his companions and pet cats, Jack and Jill who were lovingly cared for.

Les was predeceased by his parents Neil (1999) and Vickie (2015) and other close relatives.

Les will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.

Les was laid to rest next to his parents on the beautiful, peaceful sunny day of May 19, 2023 at a family graveside service officiated by Father Andrew Piasta at the St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Shell Valley.

If friends so desire donations may be made to the Expanding Community Cancer Care, c/o Russell Health Centre, Bag Service #2, Russell, MB R0J 1W0.
