JANET LAMBERT
Janet was born in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England. She grew up in the Church of England during World War II. Home was six miles from Coventry, where the bombing was devastating. Food was rationed for many years and during the war everyone carried a gas mask wherever they went, but as she put it, “we learned to share and care”.
Janet attended primary and secondary school in Kenilworth at St. Nicholas and went on to technical college in Coventry. After the war, she did her nursing training in Coventry and North Warwickshire hospitals and later met Ralph, the love of her life, while working together at a hospital in Manchester. They married in 1956 in Bourton-on-the-Water.
Shortly after she was married, Janet moved with Ralph to Jamaica for six years, living in both Kingston and Montego Bay. She worked at the University Hospital there for the cancer society. They moved back to England for a year before coming to Brandon, where they remained for the rest of their lives.In Brandon, Janet worked for the Children’s Aid Society and was part-owner of the Small House Gallery with three of her closest friends
Janet had many interests including tennis, calligraphy, art, and travel. She was a member of the Calligraphers Guild, Brandon Arts Centre, St. Matthew’s Mardi Club and Brandon Tennis Club. Janet took a genuine interest in, and thoroughly enjoyed talking to, people.
Janet is survived by her son Charles, daughter Nicola (Paul) grandchildren Aine, Zachary and Mya, as well as her sister June (David) and several nieces and nephews in England and the West Indies. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Ralph, brother Henry, sister Norma, brothers-in-law Melville and Ernest and sister-in law Sylvia.
A funeral service will be held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 403-13th Street, Brandon, MB on Monday, May 29, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Donations in Janet’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7, the CNIB, 354 10th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4G1 or St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 403 13th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4P9.

I am so sorry to hear of Janet's passing. I spoke with her not long ago and we had a wonderful conversation. She was a very warm, caring and loving friend for over 55 some years, and I always admired her wonderful sense of humor, her beautiful and readily shared smile and her empathy for all. She and Ralph and my family shared many memories from the old days at the Assiniboine Hospital, We always appreciated their generous hospitality and benefitted from her abilities as a hostess. I stayed in touch with Janet over these many years, appreciating her wisdom and we always visited personally whenever I returned to Brandon. I will very much miss her.
