DOREEN PATRICIA SHANKS

February 16, 1928 - May 7, 2023

Doreen lived a long and fulfilling life; she was born at home on the farm near Pettapiece, MB and died at the age of 95 at her residence in Red Deer, AB. She was raised on the family farm and attended Brandon College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. She furthered her education with a Bachelor of Library Science degree in 1967 from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Library Science degree in 1979 from the University of Alberta. Doreen was the head of the University of Manitoba Education Library for many years. In her retirement she enjoyed quilting, gardening, and travelling.

Doreen was a quiet, talented, knowledgeable, refined person with a heart of gold and a strong work ethic. Her family meant a great deal to her, and she was instrumental in keeping them in touch with one another and she kept track of all the extended family. As the family matriarch, lovingly referred to as GG, she shared many family recipes, the English Christmas pudding, and her famous grandma buns. She taught her daughter, granddaughters, and grandson how to make them and for Christmas 2022, grandma buns were made in Sydney, NS, Red Deer, AB, Victoria, BC, and Agnes Water in Australia.

Doreen is survived by her son Bob (Barb) and her daughter Ann (Barry), her grandchildren, Patricia (Graeme), Jennifer (Mark), David (Roxan) and Laura (Mark) as well as her great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Elijah, Quinn, William, June, Leeland, Adeline, Lawson, Abigail, and Kaitlyn. She was predeceased by her husband J E G (Ted) Shanks, sister Marianne Hurley, brother John Kite, and granddaughter Heather Lange.

A service for Doreen will be held at the Fort Garry United Church in Winnipeg, on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Her ashes will be interred at the Pettapiece cemetery on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at approximately 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Doreen's name to: Parkinson Association of Alberta, 120 - 835 Railway St. SE, Calgary, AB T2H 2V6, or donate online at Parkinson Association of Alberta.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I was in the same Library Science class at the University of Alberta as Doreen. In addition to sharing all of the experiences of being a Graduate Studies student in a small faculty, we got to know more about our fellow students through the between-classes conversations. Whenever Doreen made a comment or observation, it was always offered quietly and if it was some sly humour (and it frequently was from her) a smile would start to form during her last words and the sentence would end with a full-on beautiful bright grin. She shared observations about her life and work experiences with us which both helped us to know her better and to enhance the topic under discussion. We kept in touch for some years after graduation; I recall anecdotes about some of her travels and especially the pleasure she was getting from her quilting projects. Condolences on her passing shared with her family and friends. - Posted by: Marianne Bruce (nee Bednas) (MLS fellow student) on: Dec 01, 2024

  • Sorry to hear about your Mom Bob. Remember her when you lived on Mariam Blvd. Always so pleasant - Posted by: John miller (School friend of Bobs) on: May 27, 2023
