MAUREEN WOOD

April 19, 1952 - May 28, 2023

Where do you start to honour the life of a beautiful person who loved and was loved by so many?

Maureen was the daughter of Bill and Thora McCaine; she grew up in Fort Garry with her older sister Leslie. They spent their summers with older cousins at Winnipeg Beach on 1st Ave.

Maureen was adored and cherished by her husband Jim. They built a rich and meaningful life together, including many fantastic friends and a large family unit. They played golf and Scrabble together, frequented their timeshare in Missouri, hosted endless dinners, and travelled with many friends to interesting destinations.

Maureen led a fulfilling career teaching Art, English, and History for over 30 years in the Louis Riel School Division, followed by 15 years of substitute teaching at Fort Richmond Collegiate and Oak Park High School. Her early career began at Darwin School where she joined the Daughters of Darwin Group which developed into lifelong friendships.

Maureen was intensely creative and gave many gifts of her handmade cards, stained glass art, pottery, paper flowers, and fabric landscapes. She also danced and swam competitively, read a book a week, took clogging classes, and worked out at the gym until she was no longer able to. She was always growing and learning and trying something new.

Maureen was so much more than an "Auntie Moe", rather cherished as a second mom to her beloved Erin and Steve. She was very involved with their children, Xavier, Brynja, Maya, and Audrey. Maureen also loved her four stepdaughters; Dana, Margo, Trisha, and Ashley like they were her own. She adored her 11 grandchildren as their "Amma", and with Jim, they took all the kids on many adventures like Tinkertown, the museum, golfing, the YMCA, a hot air balloon ride, and for sleepovers filled with too many treats and late nights.

Maureen lost her brave fight to cancer and passed in the arms of the love of her life. She has left her handprint on all of our hearts, and no one can ever replace the person that she was to us. She will be deeply missed every day, but with a smile we will treasure all the days that we were gifted by her unique presence.

Maureen received great care from the medical profession, especially CancerCare. If anyone is considering a donation, please do so in her name to CancerCare Manitoba.

Maureen’s family kindly requests that you visit her tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. A photo-biography as well as memories and stories published by those who knew her are available there.
