QUEENIE SHAW COLLYER

(ELLIOTT)

April 27, 1927 – June 1, 2023

Queenie Shaw Collyer (Elliott) passed away peacefully on June 1, 2023, at the age of 96 years old, surrounded by her family at the Tri-Lake Health Center in Killarney, Manitoba.

Queenie was born on April 17th, 1927 to Rose and Albert Elliott on the family farm near Welwyn, Saskatchewan. She was the fifth child of nine children. After finishing school, she worked in both Calgary and Winnipeg as a telephone operator, and later became a hairdresser, opening a shop in Welwyn.

On July 17, 1948 Queenie married Francis Collyer, son of Mary and Walter Collyer. They lived on the family farm where Frank farmed with his Dad and did electrical work. Their two girls, Nancy and Patricia, were born while they lived there. In 1955, Frank and Queenie purchased an Esso service station in Killarney, later expanding it to include a Ford dealership and Versatile and Massy Ferguson dealership. Their son, Richard, was born in 1957 in Killarney. Frank and Queenie lived a full and happy life working, travelling and raising their children. Both Frank and Queenie were strong supporters of Killarney and volunteered many hours. Frank died of cancer in January, 1988.

After Frank’s death, Queenie continued to be a strong volunteer in Killarney as one of the founding members of Communities in Bloom and Donors Choice, guide to many bus tours to Killarney and many other things, earning her the Queen’s Jubilee Award for Volunteer Work. Queenie loved to play cards and spent many hours playing bridge and crib, and volunteering at the New Horizon Senior Center. She was a member of the Anglican Church her entire life, giving her time and talents there for many years.

Queenie was always interested in everything her family did, attending as many of their events as possible and hosting many family occasions. Her multiple scrapbooks share many of these events in her life as well as her children’s, grandchildren’s and even some of her great-grandchildren’s lives. Wonderful memories for us all.

Queenie is predeceased by her husband, Frank in 1988 and son, Richard in 2010. She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy (David) Ross and Patricia (Bruce) Turner, daughter-in-law, Deb (Richard) Collyer as well as seven grandchildren, Anne (David) Hyde, Steven Ross, Mark (Anh) Turner, Julie Mervinska, Drew (Nadirah) Turner, Danyel (Bryan) Reimer and Dana (Shaun) Woodcock, and thirteen great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Christopher, Conrad, Dyllan, Noah, Madeleine, Emmett, Aleksander, Arlo, Chloe, Theo, Jake and Zoe. She is also survived by her siblings Gert Joseph and Lionel (Adena) Elliott and sister-in-law, Betty Burwell as well as many nieces and nephews.

Queenie was the heart of her family, well loved and respected by everyone. She will be greatly missed.

A private family graveside service will be held. Donations can be made to the Killarney Foundation.

You were always there

When we needed you

No task too great or small

With a loving heart

And a willing hand

For us you did them all

Thanks for the years you gave us

And for all the times we shared,

We only pray when you left us

You knew how much we cared.
