VERNA VIVIAN WATSON

(JONES)

Sunrise May 21, 1930 to

Sunset June 3, 2023

Our dearly beloved Mom passed away peacefully at home, after a short illness.

She spent 93 years in West Kildonan. She attended Governor Semple and Victory School.

Mom was a shy avid reader. At 16, she went to work at Nutty Club and also worked at Dominion Envelope.

She met our Dad at the wedding of her cousin. They had a two-year courtship before getting married at St. Mary's Cathedral in 1954. They raised three boys in their 25-year marriage, until Dad's death in 1980.

Our Mother was a homemaker extraordinaire. She loved baking, canning, knitting and sewing.

She was an avid bowler, dart player, dedicated bingo player and also curled for a few years.

She was a member of the West Kildonan Legion, branch #30 for over 40 years.

She was also a member of the ladies’ auxiliary for 25 years.

After Dad passed in January 1980, Mom traveled with her sister Barbara to Hawaii, Ireland and Las Vegas.

Later in life, she had a happy relationship with Tom Morris. He was ever the gentleman and took her to Oliver, BC over the winter months (in the big rig). We would like to thank Tom's family for loaning their Dad to our Mom.

She was predeceased by mother Edith in 1986, father Stewart in 1990, brother Earl in 2010 and brother Bob in 2020.

She was survived by her three sons Danny, Mark and Michael (Debbie) as well as her sister Barbara and many nieces and nephews.

Flowers gratefully declined, donations may be made to CancerCare, Sisters of Charity or Humane Society.

We would like to thank the great staff of CancerCare and the entire health care team who looked after our Mother so well to have comfort at home till the end.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Padua Church at 250 Burrin Avenue with Father Dominic officiating.

In honour of our Mom, enjoy a Baileys and watch a good western movie.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Hugs and sincere sympathy to you and your brothers, Daniel. I've heard about your wonderful mother for as long as I've known you. I know how deeply you will miss her and I am glad to know she died at home and you were there to see her off. - Posted by: Naomi Frankel (friend of Daniel) on: Jun 25, 2023

  • My deepest condolences to Danny and all who knew and loved Verna. In our own younger days Danny and I would often speak of Verna as we walked along the boulevards of Vancouver’s West End when the hydrangeas were in full bloom. Verna loved them, so Danny told me, and to this day I think of this loving mother when I see hydrangeas. Even though I never met Verna, she has a special place in my heart. - Posted by: Laurel Deedrick-Mayne (Daniel’s friend) on: Jun 24, 2023

  • I am sorry for your loss. My Sincerest Condolences to you and your family. We at the time but me now met Verna & Tom in 2002 at Bel-Air Camp Ground in the fall and over the winter then and for a few years after that. We spent the winters here and gathered at the clubhouse often for various activities and potluck suppers. We enjoyed many times times with Tom & Verna. - Posted by: Garry Miller (A friend from Oliver,BC) on: Jun 12, 2023

  • Our deepest sympathies to Daniel, Mark, Micheal and Barbara. I'll always remember Micheal trying on bag of way to oversized clothes. Verna laughed so hardy through the whole fashion show! It was contagious! We will always miss her healthy self, laugh, her love of life and family. Cheers through tears to one determined, well lived and loved woman. • I've known the Watson family for 62 years. They bought my grandfather's house two doors down from my family. I fondly remember Mrs. Watson in her garden, hanging clothes on the line and making the best brownies. During the last year I had some great visits with Verna and we would talk about her winter stays in Oliver, B.C. I also would go home with a batch of her delicious brownies. I'm glad I got to spend some quality time with her this past year. Our thoughts, hugs and kisses are with Danny, Mark and Michael during this difficult time.
