KIRK GILLESPIE
After a lengthy illness Kirk passed away at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre on March 2, 2023, two days shy of his 84th birthday.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Fay, his children, Joy, Sharon Staples (Gord), and Darcy (Patti), grandchildren, Danielle (Ben), Emma, Justin, and Jordyn (Grayson), his sister Karen Sobry (Marcel), sisters-in-law, Carol Gillette (Bill) and Lois Farley (Yanni), and many nieces and nephews. Kirk was predeceased by his parents, Clayton and Irene Gillespie, Fay’s parents, Ruth and Roy Farley, brothers-in-law, Jim and Terry Farley, and by his two infant children.
Kirk was born in Brandon and raised on the Gillespie farm north of Douglas, MB. Allergies prevented Kirk from working the family farm, so after high school he joined Manitoba Hydro where he worked for 35 years, moving around the province until settling in Selkirk. There were many Hydro events full of music, dancing, and good times had at the Gillespie home. Kirk was also active in the community, having served as President and other executive roles at the Selkirk Curling Club over many decades. He was a proud member of the Selkirk Volunteer Fire Department for 30 plus years. Kirk was also a member of Hydro X and the United Church. He made many friends along his life’s journey.
Kirk loved family time at the trailer in Minnedosa, family trips to Florida, to Europe, and many camping trips. He later enjoyed his camping and fishing trips with Fay. He took several bus trips with Fay and friends over the years, travelling to the east coast, Alaska, and the southern US. Great trips were also taken to Hawaii, Nashville, Greece, Denmark, Switzerland, and to many other locations to watch World Curling events wherever they were held.
As a young father, Kirk fought and beat cancer. However following heart surgery, Kirk suffered a stroke in 2006, leaving him without the ability to speak. Never one to complain, Kirk moved forward with any and all of life’s challenges with a smile on his face and warmth in his heart for those around him.
In 2013 Kirk and Fay moved from the house on Berrisford to the Cambridge House seniors apartment where they were surrounded by old and new friends.
A memorial service for Kirk will be held at the Selkirk United Church at 202 Mclean Ave. on July 13 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Selkirk and District Community Foundation.
