KATHARINA (KATHY) PROHASKA

(nee MARX)

1926 – 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Katharina Prohaska.

She was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings, Rose, Peter, and Magdelina.

She is survived by her three children, Rose (Greg), Joe (Susan), and Trudy, along with their families; and many nieces and nephews.

Katharina started her journey in Erdevik, then Jugoslavia, which is now Serbia, in the winter of 1926. During the war she and her family escaped to Austria where she eventually married and had two children. A few years after the war ended, the family moved to Canada and landed in Winnipeg where her youngest child was born.

They lived a simple life, working hard and raising three children. Most Sunday’s in summer were spent with friends and at nearby beaches and vacations consisted of car trips to Regina, and Penticton to visit relatives. They did, however, manage a world wind trip to Jamaica one year. She always remembered best were the trips to Vancouver Island and the Alaskan Cruise that she took at the ripe young age of 86, with her youngest daughter.

Had it been possible, her biggest dream was to open her own bakery one day. She will always be remembered for all the baking that she did for the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. She baked for a variety of occasions like: weddings, Christmas, birthdays, and just because. Even in her last years at the seniors’ home her only wish was to do more baking.

She will be cremated and her final resting place will be at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

  • Sorry to hear of Oma’s passing. She was one special lady. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone quite like her! She made the best apple strudel! May she rest in peace. ❤️ - Posted by: Barb Olmstead (Family friend) on: Jul 13, 2023
