ROBERT W.S. HLADY

July 27, 1959 – July 3, 2023

Robert W. S. Hlady, age 63, passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on July 3, 2023 after his battle with cancer.

Rob was born to Paul and Glenys Hlady, on July 27, 1959 in Winnipeg.

He is survived by his wife, Alvina, his six children: Ryan, Robert, Dori, Jessica, Matt and Shane and their spouses; and his grandchildren: Shea, Ryder, Alice, Emma, Anika, Fiona, Owen, Cohen, Swayze and Sawyer as well as his sisters Sandy, Holly and their families.

Rob was an overwhelmingly kind and generous man who loved spending time with family, hosting dinners, watching movies, and travelling with Alvina and the kids on road trips across Canada, Mexico, Azores, Europe and beyond. Rob and Alvina loved to bond over construction projects, building their first house together and renovating their cabin in Lester Beach, where they spent the bulk of their summers since 1999.

His love and care for others extended into his profession in saving lives through passive fire protection, promoting progressive fire safety in the construction industry, pushing for better practices nationally and internationally.

He attended Miles McDonnell Collegiate and graduated from Red River College in 1979 which kick-started his career working for several architectural firms before co-founding Affinity Architecture, which later branched off into his own Affinity Firestop Consultants, of which he was extremely passionate about.

A life-long Winnipegger, Rob loved watching the Jets and Bombers. He loved chatting about all the new construction projects around the city. He was a dreamer, a list-maker extraordinaire, and a thumb-wrestle champion! He would offer you the full menu of drinks in the bar before you even took your shoes off and you couldn't leave the house without getting a great big bear hug.

Rob's family will host a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on July 18, 2023, at Glen Eden Funeral

Home, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the UN Refugee Agency - Ukraine Emergency in Rob's name.

  • So terribly sad to learn of Rob’s passing. I worked with Rob at Gaboury Architects in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s and was notified by another ex Gaboury friend. I consulted with Rob many times in the following decades and hired his firm several times to perform firestop audits in buildings I managed. I always enjoyed working with Rob and just hanging out with a cold beer on a hot day. He will be missed! - Posted by: John Mainer (Friend) on: Jul 08, 2023
