INGRID ERKAU

March 5, 1945 – July 6, 2023

Ingrid Erkau (nee Paas), beloved mother, Omi, and friend, passed away suddenly on July 6, 2023, at the age of 78. Born to her parents, Hildegaard and Rudolph Paas, in Hahn, Germany, at the end of the Second World War, Ingrid's life was filled with love, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to her family and community.

Growing up with her older siblings, Rudiger and Erika, Ingrid had a childhood marked by the influence of her father, a pastor. The family relocated to several cities in Germany, starting with Varel and later to Berlin, where Ingrid discovered her love for the vibrant and diverse culture of the city. Later, they settled in the Dortmund area, where Ingrid's path would intersect with her future husband.

It was in the youth group at the church in Dortmund that Ingrid met the love of her life, Karl Erkau. In 1963, Ingrid and Karl exchanged vows and embarked on a lifelong journey together. Their union was blessed with three sons: Dirk, Andy, and Michael. Ingrid embraced her role as a devoted stay-at-home mom, pouring her heart and soul into nurturing her children and creating a loving and nurturing home for her family while the family was young.

In 1970, Ingrid and Karl made the decision to emigrate from Germany to Winnipeg, Canada, seeking new opportunities and a fresh start for their growing family. Ingrid's warm and compassionate nature quickly endeared her to the community. Her Christian Faith led her to develop friendship within the close-knit community of Rowandale Baptist Church, where she dedicated her time and energy to volunteering and lending a helping hand to those in need. She also worked some years at Glazerman and Reiss Furs.

Ingrid will be remembered for her selflessness, her kind spirit, and her willingness to go above and beyond to assist others. Her presence brought joy and comfort to the lives of those around her, and her love knew no bounds. Ingrid's legacy will live on through the lives of her three sons and seven grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories they shared and the values she instilled in them.

Ingrid Erkau, may your soul find eternal peace, and may your legacy continue to inspire and guide us all. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I worked with Ingrid as her manager at Glazerman Furs for several years. She was not only the best partner in work; she became a fantastic friend. I am sorry I never got to see her. I had called many times but she was so busy with her ill husband. I recall when I took ill...Ingrid took me to many Dr appts...she was a gem. Rest peacefully my friend. - Posted by: Barbara Camara (friend) on: Jul 28, 2023

  • Condolences to Ingrid's family. I had the priviledge of meeting Ingrid and Karl at CP when my Mom Edna resided there. Edna passed December 2018. As my Mom's dementia worsened Ingrid would help me translate what my Mom was speaking in German. Such a kind, caring and devoted wife to Karl. May your parents rest easy. - Posted by: Leslie Worthington (Acquaintance) on: Jul 15, 2023
