DOROTHY ANGELA MURPHY
Dorothy passed away peacefully at Brightwater Linden Pointe, Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 12, 2023, at the age of 100 years.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Carol, Dorothy, Bill, Clifford (Brenda), Teresa (Gordon), and Patrick (Jennifer); grandchildren, Patrick, Brian, Clifford, Allan, Steven, Lori, Matthew, Tricia, Angel, Kevin, Erin, Dennis, Kathleen and Michael; great-grandchildren, Xzander, Zachary, Téa, James, Addison, Hannah, Amélie, Zach, Cassidy, Gabrielle, Eve, and Andrea. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Clifford Matthew Murphy in 1974; and her eldest daughter Marie in 2017.
Dorothy was born to Patrick and Margaret Jacobs on October 2, 1922, in Vancouver, BC where she grew up with her younger siblings Mary and Bill. She met Clifford Murphy while attending grade school and they married in 1942 during the war. Marie was born while Clifford served in the Royal Air Force Ferry Command from 1940 to 1945. Upon his return to Vancouver, they welcomed two new additions to the family, Carol and Dorothy. Clifford’s career in the Armed Forces then took the family to Quebec where Bill, Clifford, Teresa, and Patrick were born.
As a military family, Dorothy coordinated many family moves to cities including Saint-Hubert, Edmonton, and Winnipeg. No matter where the family found themselves, Dorothy made each place feel like home. She was a wonderful and caring mother, who filled the house with love and laughter. Her door was always open to those around her, including many neighbourhood children she looked after. She was a great listener, storyteller, and loyal friend, who enriched the communities she lived in.
After Dorothy’s husband passed away in 1974, she attended Red River College, obtained her driver's license, and worked at Mappins Jewellers. She was very hardworking, strong and independent. She loved to host family gatherings, read, and do daily crossword puzzles. Her faith was also very important to her, and she was an active, long-time member of St. Charles Parish.
Dorothy was always kind, intelligent, sensible and caring. Happiness for Dorothy came from making the people around her happy. Those who knew Dorothy loved her for her warm smile, willingness to help others, and great sense of humour. She will be truly missed.
The family is grateful to the staff, caregivers, and nurses at Brightwater Linden Pointe, as well as the community at The Westhaven.
A mass and celebration of life will be held at St Charles Catholic Parish (320 St. Charles St.) on Tuesday, August 1, at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow.

I would like to offer my deepest condolences with the loss of Dorothy. Dorothy was a very special lady. I had the privilege of working with Dorothy at our physiotherapy clinic. I always look forward to our appointments, and she always made me smile. Dorothy was very kind, gentle, independent, strong, and intelligent woman and it was a true pleasure that I got to know her. Also I would like to express my thanks to her son Clifford, who made it possible for his mother to attend physiotherapy. - Posted by: Mieke Vonderbank (Physiotherapist) on: Aug 03, 2023

I express my sincerest sympathy to the entire Murphy family on the loss of your beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and my aunt. Over the many years, as you, I have known Aunt Dorothy as a wonderful woman---joyous, kind, considerate and loving, as did my mother who remained a close friend of her sister-in-law until her own passing in 2007. She and I were always very appreciative of this kinship. Dorothy touched many hearts and she herself was blessed with a long good and fruitful life. As a steadfast woman of faith, she has planted "in the field of the Holy Spirit, from which she will gather from the harvest of eternal life (eternal happiness)". (Gal.6:8) And, for us who remain here, "So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up,the time will come when we will reap the harvest." (Gal. 6:9) May God bless all of you. On behalf of the Phaneuf Family, I offer our deepest condolences to the Murphys. We were neighbours for many years and also attended the same Church. She was such a lovely person with a sharp mind and a great sense of humor. She had a special relationship with our late Father, who always referred to her as "Ma". May memories of her be a blessing to you all. - Posted by: Wendy Phaneuf Sikora (Friend) on: Jul 22, 2023
