It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Norman David Freedman on Tuesday July 11, 2023, just one day after his 82nd birthday. Norm is survived by his children Jeffrey (Cairn) and Larry (Cheryle), his grandchildren Jordan, Reese, Cyra and Tamir. Norm is also survived by his brothers Garry (Dee) and Alan (Brenda) as well as his dear brothers-in-law Earl Standil and Jerry Katz and his many cherished nieces and nephews. Dad also leaves to mourn his partner of the last many years, Louise Hintz.
Norm was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 49 years Leona (Katz) and his parents, Harvey and Yodi Freedman.
Norm was born on July 10, 1941, to Harvey and Yodi in Winnipeg. Shortly after birth Norm and Yodi returned to the log cabin repeater station in Pickle Lake Ontario where his father worked as a radio operator for CNCP telecommunications. The family eventually returned to Winnipeg where norm went to Talmud Tora and then to St. Johns for high school. It was in high school at a BBYO dance that Norm looked across the room and saw Leona Katz, a moment that would start a love and partnership that would last for over a half a century.
Dad's work career started by following his dad to CN telecommunications from 1960-1970. During this time Norm and Leona started their family with the birth of Jeff in 1963 and Larry in 1966. From 1968 until 1972 Norm earned his Bachelor of Social work degree from University of Manitoba starting his life of service to the community.
Norm held various positions in social work eventually getting his master's degree in 1985 and retiring in 2004 following a 20-year employment history with WRHA-home care having held a variety of positions including program supervisor and case coordinator.
Norm was very active in community affairs including serving as president of the Board s of Beth Israel Synagogue and H.S.B.A. Foundation Inc, a senior citizens residence. Norm's volunteer activities are numerous and varied, he finally resigned from his last two boards only a few weeks ago.
Kind, gentle, caring, and altruistic are all words people use to describe Norman. He lived his life with the intention to help others.
He always focused on the positive and never said a bad word about anyone. Norm will be remembered as a gentle, kind man that would always be willing to help anyone at any time.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Manitoba Lung Associations or a charity of your choice.
