HEINRICH (HENRY) DYCK

April 2, 1933 – July 16, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his son and daughter-in-law (Darrell and Dolores Dyck), his daughters and sons-in-law (Brenda and Mark Erb; Karen Dyck and Rick Olson), and his grandchildren (Ryan and Cody Erb, Jana, and Scott Olson). He was predeceased by his loving wife on July 9, 2021. Dad was also predeceased by his two sisters and one brother and is survived by his brother and sister-in-law (Ernie and Tina Dyck).

Dad was born in Altona on April 2, 1933, to Heinrich and Margaretha Dyck. He grew up on the family farm and spoke fondly of his time there. In his later years dad particularly loved recalling the times when he and his mother worked in the United States picking potatoes and the time the family horse ate his father's pocket watch

Dad met and fell in love with Tina (Katherine) Wiebe, and they were married on February 7, 1959. Even as dad's memory failed with age, he often remembered the lovely gardens mom had kept on her family farm and how they were admired by all. Dad and mom lived in Winnipeg where they raised their three children Brenda, Darrell, and Karen. They worked hard to provide a wonderful life for their children and made numerous sacrifices along the way. They always led by example, encouraging their children to be kind to others, to work hard, and to be responsible. Dad was a loving husband and father and worked hard to ensure his family were taken care of whether that meant bringing home a paycheck, improving the space in which they lived, or simply offering support and love when it was needed most. Although dad worked hard, he always found time to have fun with his children by doing things like making us an ice-skating rink in the backyard, playing games with us on Sunday evenings, or taking us for bike rides on warm summer days. Dad was also a loving grandfather and father-in-law who made the new additions to our family always feel welcome.

Dad retired from his position with Lafarge Canada in 2000. In 2001 he received an award from Lafarge acknowledging his 42 years of loyal and devoted service. He was particularly proud of the fact that he was late for work only once (and only by minutes), after someone let the air out of all his tires.

Unfortunately, dad developed dementia when he was in his late 80's and, in the course of 3 years, moved from our family home into assisted living, supported living, and finally into the Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Although this illness took many things away, his kind and loving heart continued to shine through until his final breath. With family by his side, dad passed away peacefully on July 16th. We would like to thank all the staff at Bethania Personal Care Home for taking such good care of dad over the past year and particularly during his final hours.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Altona Seniors Centre in Altona MB on Monday August 21 from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. A private internment will take place prior to the Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, donations in dad's honour can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

  • Condolences to Darrell, Brenda, Karen and your families. Uncle Henry was always so kind but with a sense of humor. We didn’t have a lot of visits, but my last visit was when I took my mom to visit your mom and dad when she was also sick. Like always your mom served a great lunch. I can imagine that he must of been the best grandfather because his patience seemed endless. - Posted by: Carolyn Wiebe (Cousin) on: Aug 16, 2023
