JANETTE PHILLIPS
Janette, 81 years old of Winnipeg, MB, formerly of Miami, passed away Friday, August 11, at the Seven Oaks Hospital.
She is survived by her sisters, Marie Cardy and Betty Sandercock, her brother, George (Lucille), sister-in-law, Florence, three nieces, seven nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her mother, Alina (1980), her father, Ernest (1984), her brother, Sam (2022), brothers-in-law, Doug Sandercock (1999) and Syd Cardy (2019).
Janette was born October 26, 1941 in Swan Lake. Growing up on a farm she did her share of chores; milking cows, feeding chickens and working in the garden. She began her schooling in Swan Lake and completed her education in Miami after the family moved there in 1957. After graduation she moved to Winnipeg where she began working at the Manitoba Legislature. Janette took business courses in the evenings to advance her career and for many years oversaw a branch of Manitoba Social Services. Attending symphony concerts, Sunday brunch with her friends, planting and arranging flowers, closely following news of the royal family and travelling were some of Janette’s interests. Her travels included trips to the west coast and to Belgium to connect with family. Janette also enjoyed playing sports; she was a catcher in a women’s softball league, tried golf and then curling which became her life-long passion. Janette was a member of the Fort Garry Curling Club (FGCC) where she curled in the Business Girls League. She volunteered on the FGCC Board of Directors and gained experience in the club by working on committees including membership, ice contracts, rentals and fundraising. She eventually became President of the FGCC Business Girls and the FGCC. Janette later received Honorary Life Memberships for her contributions to both. Janette was also a shareholder of the FGCC Inc. until it was dissolved. Her passion was the FGCC Junior Program which she spent many years coordinating. As a delegate for the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association (MLCA), Janette volunteered for events, including city zones and provincial championships. She also volunteered her time during the Manitoba Curling Association (MCA) Bonspiel and coordinated the annual envelope assembly of information for participating teams. In recognition of her work, she received an Honorary Life Membership to the MLCA. Janette joined the Winnipeg Curling Club Association (WCCA) where she was a member on the board and later became president. Other projects Janette coordinated were the WCCA Day Annual Championship, and the Deneen Cup Championship which she oversaw for many years. In recognition of the many hours she spent enriching the sport of curling, Janette was very honored to be nominated and receive The Curl Manitoba Volunteer Award. Retirement from the Fort Garry Curling Club and her other curling projects was hard for Janette; as she enjoyed the game, the competitors and coordinating competitions. She commented that she would have loved to go back to her home club and visit, but her health did not allow for that to happen. Janette wished to thank her close friends for their friendship and support throughout her life.
Memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Wiebe Funeral Chapel in Morden.

I am sorry to read of Janette’s passing. She was the backbone of Fort Garry Business Girls for a long time. I learned a lot about our club’s history from Janette. Although she didn’t curl she kept up her membership by being a 5th player for many years and stayed part of our club. Janette was at the club every draw. I had the pleasure of getting to know her through my time on the executive. She kept us all in line. Janette was a true example of what an honorary life member means. Her presence around the curling club will be misses. - Posted by: Carol MacKay (Past-president. Fort Garry Business Girls.) on: Aug 20, 2023
