PAUL BURTNICK

1960 - 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Burtnick on August 16, at the age of 63, after a brief battle with cancer.

His loving wife of 43 years, Bernadette, and his children, Jessica, Michael and Julia were at his side. Paul is also survived by his daughter Helen. He was predeceased by his daughter Eva and his parents, Helen and Walter.

Whilst raising and supporting his family, he passionately pursued his chosen career as a land surveyor for 41 years, receiving his commission in 2010.

Paul’s glass was always full. He was a good and loyal friend to all and was always the first one to step forward to help others. Steadfast in his faith in God, Paul lived for his family and the great outdoors.

Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Avenue. Rosary will commence at 9:30 a.m. in the church. Interment will follow in Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Cemetery, 4387 Main Street.

Thank you to everyone who supported our family during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (18 entries)

  • I heard of Paul's passing just recently and I am so devastated upon hearing it. I did not have the chance to physically meet Paul but had meetings with him via teams and email correspondences to work on pressing projects related to Crown mineral and land surveys. He was very down to earth, very accommodating, and always willing to help out. I am honored to have worked with Paul. He will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace Paul, - Posted by: Mildred Valentino (Counterpart) on: Sep 27, 2023

  • So sorry to hear about Paul. I worked with Paul directly only for a month but he was very kind and understanding. I had many jobs at land titles in my 7 years there but I could always count on Paul for a visit, a kind word, we would talk about cars, mostly Mustangs. My heart goes out to you, Bernadette. Sending you hugs. - Posted by: Laverne Adolphe (Coworker ) on: Sep 02, 2023

  • To Bernie & Family, I am so very sorry to learn of Paul’s passing. Please know that my thoughts & prayers are with all of you. I have a lot of wonderful memories of Paul from out time together in our teenage years. He was a very special person in my life who held a special place in my heart! We met in the mid 70’s at Pic a Pop on McPhillips St. where one of my best friends worked. Paul had an awesome personality, great smile, kind, caring & always a fun guy to be around! He was always very focused on the things he liked & wanted to do & even back then he was a very hard worker! My family thought the world of him! Paul & I went our own ways, we lost contact for awhile but in our mid 30’s we reconnected. I got to know Paul’s wife Bernie & their children. What a beautiful family Paul has! We shared in some great times together! Paul my heart is filled with sadness knowing that you are no longer here…I am so blessed that you were a very special friend to me...in my heart there will always hold a special place for you…Spread your wings & fly high my dear friend You are going to be missed! - Posted by: Tammy Fastershank Kowerko (Childhood Girlfriend & Friend of Paul's Family) on: Aug 18, 2023

Bernadette and Paul spent a year travelling Canada with us on the President’s tour. What an amazing time we had! Paul was passionate, always happy and there as a friend and colleague. • I was so saddened to hear of Paul's passing. We were classmates at Avery from Grade 1 on. My earliest memory of him was him wearing his deep pink bell bottom pants in Grade 1 or 2. Like so many have said, he was quick with a smile and, despite the years in between, conversation was always like no time had passed. My deepest sympathies to Bernadette and the rest of the family. He's with Eva now. Take care of each other. - Posted by: Shannon Plischke (School friend ) on: Aug 17, 2023

  • We met Paul and Bernadette while travelling across Canada attending various Provincial Survey Associations AGMs. Paul was a very nice and talkative person. We also spent a week with them and some other surveyors in Mexico a few winters ago. I was shocked to see the text I received this morning. He will be greatly missed. Please accept our most sincere condolences for the loss of Paul. - Posted by: Michael & Carolyn Waschuk (Land Surveying Colleague) on: Aug 17, 2023

  • Like Darren Brown, I followed the very similar path. Met Paul in Grade 1 @ HC Avery and stayed friends off and on throughout our school years. Was always a great conversation with him at our reunions. Couldn’t see too many people not liking Paul as he had a very pleasant disposition. He certainly will be missed. - Posted by: Neil Hutsel (School Friend) on: Aug 17, 2023

  • Huge hugs and our condolences to you, Bernie, and to the kids, at a time like this. I worked with Paul, and a super team of great guys and gals, for the Province of Mb. for numerous years. I remember, Paul and I grew very close when we spent every waking moment together, when we worked a job together for quite a few months, at Hecla Island. Got a chance to live in the Bunkhouse up there together, with no one else around. It was a terrific experience! Paul was the best!! So sorry he’s physically gone, but always remembered and cherished. He always had a smile and a laugh to share around the office at 1007. Sure will miss him!! - Posted by: Harry & Lois Behlke (Co-worker & Long Time Friends ) on: Aug 17, 2023

  • Wow, so sad. I met Paul on my first day of public school, Grade 1 at HC Avery, in Mrs. Whales' class. We were immediately good friends, and stayed that way certainly through the balance of primary school. He had a great and warm smile and was just a real nice guy. Our paths diverged through the upper grades, although we continued at the same schools. I particularly enjoyed reconnecting with Paul from time to time at the Garden City reunions - he was the easiest guy to catch up with. May his memory be a blessing to his family. • Paul was a great coworker who cared about people and was always ready to share a joke and who enjoyed life. I enjoyed my time working with him first at the Surveys and Mapping Branch and later at Geomanitoba. He is gone too soon. My deepest condolences to hs family. - Posted by: Bob Bruce (Coworker) on: Aug 17, 2023
