MAX (MAXIMILIAN) CHRISTIAN MAZUR

Max (Maximilian) Christian Mazur passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at the young age of 54 years.

He was predeceased by his mom and dad, Gladys and Ed (Spider) Mazur. Max is survived by his siblings, Mark (Maria), Roxana, Ramona (Nat), Joel (Cindy), Mace (Karen); and his nieces and nephews, Mackenzie (Corey), Mitchel, Cassidy, Gina, Cali, Joseph, Rebecca and Joshua.

Born in Winnipeg, he attended Christ the King School, Windsor Junior High and Glenlawn Collegiate. He went to the University of Prince Edward Island on a hockey scholarship. After returning to Winnipeg he worked at Stony Mountain Corrections Institute as a Corrections Officer.

Raised in a busy happy household, he was indulged while being the youngest of six kids and had always maintained a close relationship with his mom and dad. His brother Mace was always stuck with him as the older siblings got to participate in more “grown up” activities, although, the others did enjoy keeping him in tow while out for some fun adventures.

Hockey was a constant theme with Max from a young age to adulthood. He was an avid Winnipeg Jets fan but you wouldn’t have known that when you walked into his home and saw all of the Montreal Canadian (Habs) memorabilia on the wall. Max was very proud of his dad’s hockey career.

Max was a large presence in the dressing room and we know many of his hockey buddies will miss that. It brings us peace to know that he was out enjoying time with good friends in the immediate days prior to his passing.

Max stayed connected with many close friends and was grateful for them all. Whether known from childhood, hockey, work, or other places, he appreciated them immensely and the positive influence they had on his life. He was a loyal friend. Max often put on a hard outer shell, but often showed his softheartedness underneath. He enjoyed travelling with his friends from golf adventures to trips to Vegas.

Max also enjoyed his time outdoors, with family and friends but especially with his dog Sam. He was always very proud of his nieces and nephews, making them laugh while hearing of their accomplishments. Any hug from Max was a bear hug and he always loved Cali’s “best hugs ever”.

Although a raised Catholic and truly a spiritual person, we all knew not to call him on Sundays when he was watching NASCAR.

Max will be missed very much and was loved by us all.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 5, 2023 (Max’s 55th birthday) from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the St. Boniface Golf Club, 100 Youville Street, Winnipeg. A private family interment will be held at a later date.

If friends so desire, and in keeping with Max’s love of all animals, donations can be made to Manitoba Mutts Dog Rescue.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I was sorry to hear we lost Max. Strangely, I unexpectedly met another old schoolmate on the very day he passed and he came up in our reminiscence. Reading these tributes stirs many memories; Max having a “big personality” definitely being one. We were just kids and Max and I got into our fair share of trouble since the Windsor days. Some might say we were not the best influence on one another but every “bad choice” is a memory that makes me smile looking back. We only met once since high school but when he saw me on the street downtown some years ago he went out of his way to greet me and have a chat. Though we weren’t the closest of friends I’m glad I grew up with you in our little school and tore up the neighborhood together in our youth Max. I hope you enjoy strapping on the skates with your Dad brother. - Posted by: Sean Thompson (Schoolmate) on: Aug 26, 2023

  • My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Max and I played hockey together in our Teens and was part of a fantastic part of my life, his sense of humor and wit will always be cherished. Rest in peace my Friend - Posted by: Paul Jansen (Friend ) on: Aug 24, 2023

  • The Plumbers Hockey Group offers condolences to the Mazur family on the loss of Max. It's been a while since Max played with our motley crew, but the guys won't have forgot him! Max was a very good hockey player - that seems to run in the family - but more so he was a real character. He may have picked up a few pointers from older brother Mace, but he could shell out witty chirps with the best of them! We'll miss you Max. - Posted by: Bruce Johnson (Friend) on: Aug 23, 2023

  • Saddened to hear about the passing of Max as I went to all three schools with him in parallel paths of education literally from K-12 which he would bring up whenever we saw each other. Said we were the only one of friends that had that bond which I thought was silly for him to think of. Of course, we all lose touch after the High School years but glad to have recently get together we had a nice quiet beer with him and another friend at the Cambridge Hotel a little while ago and it was such a fast meet up my son came as well and got to listen in on Max and all the stories growing up together. Had to promise my son in the parking lot that “what was said in the Cambridge stays in the Cambridge (lol)” and doesn’t go back to his Mom. Max remembered something from 40 years ago that really surprised me and he brought it up in front of my son Steven that really impressed me that night. At Glenlawn me and my buddy Dale (a HUGE Montreal Canadien fan knowing every detail of the Habs history) would regale Max with player trivia. (I think I gave Max my “Hockey News” issues for the better part of all High School after I read them.) He knew how much hockey ran in my veins and in lunchroom we would talk about his Dad playing for the Habs and would tell him stuff that he said even he did not know. That just had him blown away and, of course, with his Dad winning two Stanley Cups with him on the ice feeding TWO of the winning goals in 1953 to win the Cup without ever playing a NHL regular season game is not just rare but unheard of! So one night Max arranged for us (me, Dale, Max and his Dad) to all be together at his home on “the Crescent” and for three hours Max couldn’t get the smile off his face as we plowed through trivia that even blew his Dad away. His Dad was chuffed and getting a kick of us doing a play by play of us talking about how Maurice Richard hugging Elmer Lach so hard he broke his nose and his Dad said “I know I was 10 feet away!!!!!” and seeing Max light up and so proud remains as pure gold!!!! Hard to explain as we can now look up everything and anything online but back then it didn’t work like that being pre Internet. Leaving his house got a big “man that was awesome” and could see how much Max loved his Dad and his Dad loved him. And trust me when I say that in those years Max told my son that night how it went down as perhaps one of his most favorite times with his Dad and I think how special that was as a gift for Max to say it to my son that night. I wished I would have thanked him then. Sitting at the cabin and looking over the lake tonite will have a little beverage and remember him fondly. My condolences to his family that loved him so. - Posted by: Darren Ingleson (Friend) on: Aug 19, 2023

  • Our deepest condolences to all of Max’s family. Max was involved in lots of sports with Michael and boys. When he would see me at Y, he would always encourage me. The memory I remember of Max was how he waited hours in a line up at my husband's funeral to extend his wishes to all of us. It meant so much to all of us. He was thoughtful and caring. He surely will be missed by many. He will be in our thoughts and prayers. From all my family, Beverley Bettens, Michael and Bridget, Randy and Daphne, Jamie and Cynthia and Kevin Bettens. 🙏😇 - Posted by: Beverley Bettens (Friend) on: Aug 19, 2023
