GEORGE EDWARD WILSON

April 16, 1928 - Winnipeg, Manitoba August 5, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

George Wilson, beloved husband of the late Doreen Wilson, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the age of 95 years. George was born April 16, 1928, to Mary (nee Poulin) and Charles Wilson, the youngest of four boys.

George and Dorie met working at what was then called Canadian General Electric and married in 1949. Working for GE meant being subject to many moves in Canada and in 1964 Dad requested a transfer to Winnipeg to be closer to family. Ahead of his time, Dad had several separate careers that included working for himself in real estate and insurance. His daughter Kathy worked with him in the business, and both enjoyed that rewarding relationship. As General Manager of the Insurance Bureau of Manitoba, George mentored many young colleagues, several of whom kept in contact with him for many years. After he finally retired, Dad and Mom travelled to places far and near, notably Portugal, France, Hawaii, Israel and to Banff and Calgary to see family. In 2001, George and Dorie moved to Calgary to be closer to their daughters and sons-in-law.

Dad spent the last two and a half years at Generations Calgary where he was treated with love, friendship and respect. He felt fortunate to live there and our family is very grateful to the amazing caregivers at Generations for the exceptional care they gave our father.

George was predeceased by his wife Doreen, his brothers, Charles (Gwen), Robert (Marguerite) and Frank, younger sister Mary Elizabeth, and nephew Frank Wilson. He is survived by his sister-in-law Joanna (Frank) Wilson; daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Doug Machuk of Banff, and Kathleen and John Paulsen of Calgary; special friend Elva Dame of Calgary, with whom he shared 15 wonderful years and new adventures; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends.

The interment of George’s ashes will be held in at St. John’s Cathedral Cemetery, 135 Anderson Ave., Winnipeg, on September 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., for family and friends. Reception to follow. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of George Wilson, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • George was a very special man to me. When I was very you, my father passed away and Uncle George took it upon himself to be there for us. Whether it was to play catch in the front yard with me or help my brother with his math homework, he was always there. Uncle George's dry wit and big hugs are just two of the things that will live in my memories forever. There are no words to explain how much I will miss him. Always a gentleman - Love you Uncle George. - Posted by: Patricia Taylor (Neice) on: Aug 28, 2023
