• When Stan retired from Fish Inspection in 1996, we wrote this song for him: The Ballad of Mr. Schick (Sung to the tune of the Battle of New Orleans) In 1966, Stan hopped upon a jet He flew to London town, some scientists for to get He took along some photos and he took along some beer FRB moved to Winnipeg and didn’ shed a tear He hired some people and the money kept a coming There isn’t nigh as many as there was that while ago Hired more people and the projects kept a growing From Alberta’s borders to East Ontario. Stan ordered up some art in the seventies some time, To hang in public offices, but then there was a crime, They disappeared from the row, and left not a clue, Stan was on the warpath, and knew just what to do. He ran through the halls and he ran through the offices, Lookin’ to see where the art had gone astray, He found all the pieces, and he found the culprits, Burton and Jack through J.V.’s were gonna pay! They built the institute in 1972, Stan played a major role, there was so much to do, It really was a piece of art, it looked like a dream, And yesterday I heard that Stan planned the color scheme. He picked out the purple, and he picked out the green, He thought that they were pretty, but they really were obscene, We’d really like to change them, but we know we ain’t Because the solar warehouse is full of that old paint! Stan has been a wheeler dealer almost all his life, From appliances in Lockport to land in Yellowknife, He’s secured a place, deep in all our hearts, From those of us still young to one of you old farts. He hammered and he sawed and he used a little glue, And he made some little reindeer for me and maybe you, He worked so hard like a house on fire He made so many that now he can retire. • Stan will also be remembered for his long term contribution to the Freshwater Institute (FWI) of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Stan helped develop and lead the administrative programs of the FWI from even before its opening on the University of Manitoba campus in 1973. Highlights of his work including initial work at the London Biological Station, transfer of staff to Winnipeg, participation in the planning for the design and construction and maintenance of the FWI and fisheries field stations from the high Arctic to the Experimental Lakes Area and planning and financial programs nationally. He had many colleagues at the FWI and it is unfortunate that he will not be able to attend the 50th anniversary of the FWI later this fall.
