AUBREY (AUBY) ALBERT BLOOMFIELD
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our much loved husband, dad, brother, uncle, Zaida and friend. Auby left our side on Friday, May 5, 2023 after a short fight with very aggressive cancer. His immediate family surrounded him.
Auby was born in Winnipeg on May 11, 1940, to Phillip and Marion (Cohen) Bloomfield. He is predeceased by his parents and his older brother Joel. He was the second oldest of five children. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda. His four children Alan (Tammy), Benny, Robyn (Norm) and Josh (Amy) as well as his three siblings David, Naomi and Judy. He leaves behind nine grandchildren ranging in age from 5 to 33. Alan’s kids Hannah and Morgan, Benny's kids Buddy and Arlo, Robyn's kids, Mackenzie, Tatum and Harrison and Josh's kids, Aiden and Olivia.
Dad had many jobs in his day prior to being a serial entrepreneur. He worked for a year as an electrician after Tec Voc. He worked for MB Hydro climbing poles. He worked as a porter for CN Rail. He sold cars, he sold insurance. The beginning of his restaurant career was moving to Saskatoon in 1968 to manage the Bus Depot there. He got hired by A&W to open to first coffee shop-style restaurant in Western Canada back in Winnipeg during which time he met the owners of a new concept restaurant being built called the Old Spaghetti Factory. He began working for them in 1970. He opened and trained four other locations and then ran Winnipeg until he went out on his own. He opened Lock Stock & Barrel in the fall of 1972 and converted the successful restaurant to the 50’s 60’s rock n roll club, Desotos in 1986. He also opened a Desotos location in Toronto in 1988. Some of the other restaurants Dad created were The Underground Pizza Works, JJ Mudd, The Boiler Room, The Rainbow Dragon, The Bagel Works, and the much-loved Cheaters Nightclub. In 1990 after beginning to recover from a bad car accident he started his second career when he opened The Back Comfort Shoppe on Portage, he renamed the store to Backworks when he moved to St. James and then later shifted to Reliable Mobility. He sold the business and retired in 2012.
Burial took place on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the Rosh Pina Cemetery. Dad would have wanted people to donate to CancerCare MB.

My very first job was as a busboy at Auby's Lock, Stock, and Barrel restaurant in 1975. He was a good boss and his work ethic rubbed off. I also remember a few staff parties he threw for his team, and he was as generous host to his staff as to his customers. He will be missed. - Posted by: Stephen Farr (Employee) on: Sep 23, 2023

I truly enjoyed having Auby as a boss at Lock Stock & Barrel, 1981. I worked in the kitchen as a line cook for my first job in a fine dining establishment and learned a lot that followed me throughout my 14 year career as a chef all over Western Canada and Manitoba's North. Condolences to his family and friends which were many. - Posted by: Doug Rayner (ex-employee) on: Sep 20, 2023

Auby was a loving and generous man who left a tremendous legacy of his large and wonderful family. He maintained special relationships with each of his children, loved them and was so proud of each one of them. He adored and treasured his cherished grandchildren. Auby was determined to achieve success in life despite decades of health challenges, to provide a better life for his family. He lived a very full life and is sadly missed by all of us. - Posted by: Judi Fielding (sister) on: Sep 09, 2023
