THOMAS ALEXANDER BLACK
It is with deep sadness that family announces the passing of Tom on August 31st, 2023, at the age of 97.
Tom was born May 10, 1926, in Washington, County Durham, England, to Jack and Ann (née Tappenden) Black. He was the younger of their two children. In his youth Dad was active in athletics and later during his working years and in early retirement he enjoyed golf and gardening.
Upon leaving school Dad was apprenticed as a carpenter. He served with the British Forces, Durham Light Infantry during The Second World War. Following the war, he worked in the building trade. He married Sheila (née Outterside) in 1950, and in 1955 they, with their young daughter Glynis, immigrated to Canada settling in Winnipeg.
Dad continued to work in the building trade until he joined the City of Winnipeg as a Building Inspector, a job he enjoyed until his retirement. In his retirement Dad and Mam travelled extensively, making many trips back home to England, and traveling throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.
Dad was predeceased by wife Sheila, his mother and father, Ann and Jack Black, his sister Nancy Carr and brother-in-law Maurice (Carr). He is survived by his daughters Glynis and Jane (Debbie), and numerous nieces and nephews and their families in England.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that if friends so desire donations be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
A Funeral Mass will be held at a later date in Our Blessed Lady Immaculate Church, the Village, Washington, County Durham, England, and he will be laid to rest with his mother and father in keeping with his wishes.
