BETTY (CATHERINE) STEIGERWALD

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Steigerwald (nee Marks) on September 10, 2023. Betty passed away peacefully in Winnipeg, in her 94th year. Betty was predeceased by her husband Steve Steigerwald in January 2022.

The oldest of four children, she grew up in humble circumstances in Dryden, Ontario. Travelling to Winnipeg to work as a teenager, Betty met Steve at a YMCA dance, who became her soulmate for 69 years. Together they raised a family on South Drive, in Fort Garry. Despite starting their life together with little, they managed to raise four children who became accomplished professionals. Perhaps their greatest gift was sending their children into the world with ethical values. Betty and Steve shared a passion for the theatre, ballet, opera and music, and dining with close friends. They spent summers at Victoria Beach until they bought a cottage on Kendall Inlet Island in Clearwater Bay, which they cherished and renovated over the years. Since 2014, Betty has been a resident at Portsmouth Retirement Home in Tuxedo. She and Steve loved their suite and it became their new home. We would like to thank all the Portsmouth staff for their care and attention over the years.

Once her youngest child, John, started school, Betty became a student at the University of Manitoba, studying Religious Studies and English. Always a bright student at school, she relished this opportunity to attend university. Her husband Steve was very proud when she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at the same graduation ceremony as her son John. In later years, she volunteered at Victoria Hospital. Sharing with Steve a keen interest in current events, she was still discussing politics in the last weeks of her life.

Betty was predeceased by her sister Shirley. She will be missed, but always remembered, by her brother George and her sister Dorothy, and her four children, Ron (Miriam), Lynn (Frank), Joan (Ed) and John (Chris). She was loving grandmother and great-grandmother to Sarah and Alex, Katherine and Martina, Nicole, Tyler and Dylan, Izzy, Mia and Jake.

We would like to thank the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Department staff for their compassionate care in her final hours.

At her request there will be no funeral and a private celebration of her life will be held later. Friends may make a donation to an organization of their choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • It was sad to hear of the passing of Mrs. Steigerwald. Steve and Betty were friends of my parents, Paul and Frances. I remember her well at University of Manitoba. She was always there with a big smile and encouraging word. Such a highlight of the day to see her. Before my mother’s retirement party from the University of Manitoba, they showed up at my house an hour early and we had a great visit. Steve gave me great advice when I was contemplating law school. He was a very savvy and experienced businessman. He said “ Matt, I think I know you. Do you want to be lawyer or be the guy who hires lawyers.” His way of politely saying, I’d be a terrible attorney. My heartfelt sympathies to the Steigerwald family at this time of loss. - Posted by: Matt Herriot (Family Friends) on: Sep 19, 2023

  • Betty was really a kind, funny and sharp witted lady. I really enjoyed our chats over the years when she would come in to get her hair done. She was always so up to date on current events and just a delight to talk to. My deepest condolences to the family. She was definitely a bright light.
