Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOROTHY JESSIE WAUGH
Dorothy Jessie Waugh (nee Frisken), BSC, BA, died peacefully September 12, 2023, of natural causes, at home with her family. She was 97 years old. Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years Dr. Frederick P. Waugh in 2012 also by her dear brother John Frisken (Audrey). She will be remembered with the most profound affection by her five children: Martha Jane, Robin Jack, Keith James (Kristin Anderson), Clive Bruce (Korinne) and Liam Patrick. Her grandchildren: Jilian Maddin, Jake, Sam, and Hunter (Talia) Warden, Anne (Zev) and Colin Waugh, Brendan (Maureen) Andrew and Nicole (Devin) Waugh, great-grandchildren: Ava, Hazel, Jude and Vince, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends.
Dorothy was born in Calgary AB in 1926. She grew up in Winnipeg MB and graduated from Kelvin High School in 1944. While completing her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Manitoba, she met Fred, who later became a physician associated with the Winnipeg Clinic. They were married in 1952. She continued her laboratory work after completing her degree in Science (Bacteriology), which was her occupation in Winnipeg (at the Winnipeg General Hospital) and also in London, England from 1956-1958 while Fred completed his Medical Fellowship.
Their stay in England sharpened their taste for international travel–a pursuit they enjoyed whenever the opportunity permitted. Shortly after their return from England, they established a household at 686 Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg, a time that all of Dorothy’s children remember with deep fondness. She also volunteered for the Women’s Committee of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, where eventually she became Chairman of the Things Antique Shop. In addition, she became a partner of a catering business and served as a member of the Altar Guild at Saint George’s Anglican Church in Crescentwood, where she and Fred were active members. All of us enjoyed, during this time, many pleasant memories from camping trips, and later from stays at the cottage at Austin Lake, Ontario, which was built in 1978. We all were proud when she achieved her Bachelor of Arts in Art History (1985) at the University of Winnipeg.
Dorothy and Fred retired to Salt Spring Island B.C. (1995), where Dorothy volunteered with Salt Spring Seniors for Seniors and the local Library. With Fred, she was an active member of the Anglican church there and continued to enjoy gardening and the many other pleasures of retirement in the Gulf Islands, where the family enjoyed many visits during their time there. Following Fred's death, Dorothy moved to southern Ontario to be closer to several of her children who live there. Her love of flowers continued throughout her entire time with us, even when her dementia appeared about 4 years ago. She was a most active, patient, understanding and loving mother and will be dearly missed by all of us.
Many thanks to the staff at the Roxborough and the Amica residences in Newmarket Ontario for their kindness and assistance.
