ALFRED JAMES TWELLS
Alfred James Twells passed away peacefully with family by his side on September 24, 2023. Alfred was born on January 19, 1924 in Craven area of Saskatchewan to Edward and Elizabeth. He was the sixth of 10 children. The family moved to a farm in the Brookside area in the 1930s. There he attended a one-room schoolhouse. But, like many of the era, had to leave school early to help on the farm. He didn’t stay on the farm however and eventually ended up in Brandon working for CN Rail.
On October 9, 1959, in the midst of a major snowstorm, Alfred married Maxine Warren. They would immigrate to California for a time but would find themselves drawn back home, arriving back in Brandon in 1965 with four-year-old Jeanetta and 11-month-old Janice. After working for a time for Modern Dairies he went to work for the Brandon Mental Hospital. Starting at the barns Alfred would work his way up to the head groundskeeper by the time he retired in 1989.
During retirement he would take up golf, finding that he had a rather good aptitude for it. He also spent many hours watching his favourite ball team, the Blue Jays, play. Alfred and Maxine travelled a great deal seeing many parts of the U.S., Europe, the Caribbean, and Canada. He had two charitable hobbies. One was collecting and turning in cans. It was great for the environment and the funds were donated to the Sunday school at their church. He also took up sewing quilt tops for the church quilting bees, sewing more than 300. With the entire family in the same neighborhood, another past time of his retirement years was watching his three grandchildren grow. In his later years his greatest joy was his seven great-grandchildren. He was rather fortunate to maintain his good health right into his 90s, driving until he was 92.
We will remember a loving husband and father. A dad who would do anything for us. A grandpa who was very proud of his grandkids. A great-grandpa whose joy was his great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents and nine siblings. Alfred is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maxine; his daughters Jeanetta (Paul) and Janice (Royce); his grandchildren Rebecca (Michael), Sean, and Ryan (Amy); and his beloved great-grandchildren Elijah, Derrick, Roy, Sophia, Mitchell, Maxwell, and Raymond.
Alfred was laid to rest at a graveside service at Rosewood Memorial Gardens on October 13, 2023. In lieu of flowers feel free to donate to Heart and Stroke, CancerCare Manitoba, or Funds for Furry Friends. The family would like to thank the kind staff at A3 who took great care of "Alfie" through his final months. We would also like to thank all the caring friends for their kind words, thoughts and support during this time.
