EMMA BOWMAN

(EMMANUELLE SLOAN LIPMAN)

April 28, 1924 – October 1, 2021

Emma we never got to have a proper family celebration of your life - We didn't even put together a fitting obituary to honour you, Covid prevented it. On this the second anniversary of your passing, this is our way of saying how much you mean to us as the Matriarch of our family.

You were born with nothing and yet you forged a dynasty of seven children and with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, your dynasty is 58 plus the wonderful people who married into our family, and we span five countries.

You were an amazing, feisty wee Scots woman from Glasgow! You were strong, compassionate, loving, caring, generous and an amazing baker. You were the most wonderful Mother, Granny/Gigi and Great Gigi. You went through hell for us - your children and gave us intrinsic values to last a lifetime.

Your life was not always easy! From the Gorbals of Glasgow, a ship before the end of the war with your wee Isabella to Capetown, to Springs in Gauteng, Mozambique East Africa, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), UK and Canada. You lived in the cold north of Uranium City, SK, Leaf Rapids, MB, warm Kelowna, BC, and your final move to Kanata, ON. Wherever you were Em - we came home to you, and you went to see so many of us in our homes through the years. You saw so much of life from the good, the bad and the ugly and yet you never wavered, you kept us all together and loved us. A golden thread from you to all of us.

You and I had an amazing seven years together Em. We still travelled and had wonderful times with all the family either going to them or them coming to Kanata. Covid came and we hunkered down - as did the rest of the world. Sadly, my darling you didn't understand the size of the virus. At the end of your life, Isabella the oldest and me Jax, the youngest, and Phil - were by your side as you left this mortal realm. You used to sing to us in your lovely lilting Scottish voice...a Sunday school hymn from when you were a wee child:

“Zacchaeus was a wee litle man

And a wee litle man was he

He climbed up in a sycamore tree

For the Lord he wanted to see”……

Remembering you with love,

Thank you for all the memories, Mum.

All your children, our children, and many friends.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Emma, my GG, was one of the strongest women I know, she taught me well; from teaching me our beloved Sky Boat Song, to having wee tea parties on her balcony, my GG was so loved, and by so many. As my Nana writes in her tribute (see above), she had over 58+ (close to 70 now) in her legacy. She taught me not only to be kind, but to always have eyes open. Granny was the epitome of all that is good in the world. She is so loved, and is never, ever forgotten. Over the Sea to Skye my Hen, we all love and miss you. - Posted by: Alora (Great-Dranddaughter) on: Jan 04, 2024

  • For whatever reason Emma's picture caught my eye. A woman of strength/character came to mind. Read her tribute (so lovingly written) and having visited Scotland (friends still living there) on several occasions, I could feel the history/hardship of this great lady in the day. The school hymn with the Sycamore Tree (just now before its felling - so very sad) being mentioned. Forwarding this beautiful tribute to our friends still living in Glasgow. Let us not forget our ancestry. Bravo to Emma's legacy. Madeleyne - Posted by: Madeleyne Nadeau-Fillion (Other) on: Oct 02, 2023
