ANTHOULA (ANN) LATSOUDES

1925 - 2023

With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Anthoula Latsoudes on Friday, September 29, 2023. We are deeply thankful for the years of good health and the lifetime of memories she gifted us. She was considered the matriarch of the family.
Her life in Canada encapsulated the aspirations, grit, and strength of a pioneering first-generation Greek woman. Her narrative has become an emblem of hope and inspiration for generations to follow. She was an active member of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and a long-standing member of the Greek community. The loss of her will leave a significant void for her family and all who knew her.
Anthoula was predeceased by her father Andoni Caravelis; mother Dimitra Caravelis; husband Edward Latsoudes; daughters, Dimitra Kolitsas and Georgia Chatzoglou; siblings, Artemis (Elias) Spathis, Rena (George) Yiannas, Maria Tsapralis, Helen (Prodromos) Constantinides, and Vasilios Caravelis; and nephew Andoni Caravelis.
She is survived by, daughters, Barbara (Constantinos) Loutas and Kathrine (Chris) Olmstead; sister-in-law Valia Caravelis; sons-in-law, Tony Kolitsas and Stavros Chatzoglou; grandchildren, Christian (Leah) Chatzoglou, Sophia Kolitsas, Marianne (Vasili) Mattheos, Andreas (Saba) Loutas, Anthea (Marian Grabowski) Kolitsas, and Eleni Loutas; great-grandchildren, Eddie Chatzoglou, Zoe Chatzoglou, Katina Demi Marie Grabowski and other great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, goddaughter, and loving extended family.
Anthoula was born in Thessaloniki, Greece and emigrated from Kifissia, Greece to Winnipeg, Canada in 1947. Shortly after her arrival, she married her loving husband, Eddie. The two of them assisted with the emigration of several of her siblings from Greece to Winnipeg. Opening their house up to them until they could land on their feet. They raised four daughters in their West End house. She loved that house and all the good memories of raising her family there. She was known for the grape leaves she grew in the backyard and would gather bunches to send out to others to make dolmathes. She always wanted to drive by to see and check on the status of the house, even after she moved out.
Anthoula was celebrated for her culinary talents, her kitchen was a realm of magic where traditional Greek dishes, handed down from her mother, came to life. She loved throwing dinner parties for family and friends where she would feature her amazing Greek cooking. She took immense joy in ensuring every plate was made to perfection.
She was a devoted wife, cooking and delivering homemade food to her husband who worked long hours at his store. Unfortunately, she lost her loving husband Eddie too early in life and had to be strong for her four daughters. She loved her Greek roots and was adamant her daughters attend Greek school, and Sunday school, as well as having them travel to Greece many times to stay with relatives in Athens. She loved everything Greek and would always watch her Greek TV and news. She was an avid reader and was interested in news from all over the world.
As we navigate the sorrow of her absence, we are also reminded to celebrate the myriad of experiences and cherished memories she has graciously shared. We will always love and miss you.
We would like to extend our thanks to all the staff at the Revera Portsmouth Independent Living, where she lived for the past nine years. We would also like to thank the staff of JTRC Management who assisted with our mom’s care the past seven months.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make donations in Anthoula’s memory to the Greek School at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, with Rev. Fr. Gregory Scratch presiding. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery.
