CECIL HERBERT MAXWELL

June 13, 1928 – September 29, 2023

A good man left us on Friday, September 29, 2023. Cecil “Cec” Herbert Maxwell was born on Friday, the 13th of June, 1928, to Robert “George” and Ellen Ester “Hettie” (nee Hawker) Maxwell of Portage la Prairie. Cec was the fourth child in a family of five and was predeceased by them all.

From his early years, Cecil showed an aptitude for mechanics, and later carpentry. He used these skills throughout his life for car repairs, and being Mr. Fix-It. Although not huge in stature, he inherited the capacity to do hard physical-type work when it was required.

Always a hockey fan, Cec came to Brandon in 1950 when his younger brother, Ron started to play for the Wheat Kings. The two had been inseparable growing up in Portage, and together they stayed at the same boarding house.

Job opportunities were few, but after several years of short-term employment, he began working at Anglo Oil Refinery, remaining there until its closure in 1969. A two-year stint at a gas plant in Fox Creek, Alberta followed. Back in Brandon in 1973, Cecil secured employment at Brandon General Hospital until his retirement.

Cecil married Joyce Phipps in 1955, at “old” St. George’s Church. At this time, he had already bought a lot at 340 – 25th Street and had started construction. This project took three years. He can also be credited with several garages, a cabin at Grey Owl and the continual home improvements over many years. Cec enjoyed Casino bus trips, bingo nights and long walks in all kinds of weather. He was always busy until some health issues forced him to slow down.

Cec is survived by his wife Joyce; son Lindsay (Marilee) and grandsons Kris and Brad; son Warren and twin granddaughters Tyra and Alysa; sisters-in-law Bella Maxwell of Victori, BC and Edith Henchey (nee Phipps) of Walnut Creek, California; and several extended family members. He was predeceased by an infant son in 1961 and his siblings Bob in 2011, Ron in 2016, Helen in 2006 and Joyce in 2013.

The family will cherish Cec’s memory privately.

Donations in memory of Cec may be made to the Brandon Riverbank Inc., #1-545 Conservation Drive, Brandon, MB R7A 7L8.
