MICHAEL STACK

June 5, 1943 - October 2, 2023

Michael was born in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, one of four brothers, two of whom survive him. He and his wife Darlene came to Winnipeg in 1969 where he taught Philosophy at the University of Manitoba until his recent retirement. Michael chose to donate his body to the Department of Human Anatomy, College of Medicine, and requested no flowers, fuss or gathering.

Goodbye, old friend.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • My Condolences to Darlene and the family and my apologies for being so late with this -- I only just found out. Michael was a valued colleague whether in the classroom or in the Senior Common Room and at College functions. Because of his interest in Classics he often sat in on our courses, including several of mine. It was always a pleasure to see him in my classes, not just for his contributions to the class-work but also for his well-considered and helpful comments about the courses themselves and the teaching. - Posted by: John Tamm (Colleague) on: Jul 26, 2024

  • I was one of Michael's Meadow Lake classmates from Gr 1 to 12. In Grade 1 I was going to marry Michael so that his mother, Bertha, would bake cookies for us all the time! Later on, many hours were spent playing Monopoly in the Stack home with school friends. Such good memories of a kind, witty and gentle friend. - Posted by: Johanne(Evanishen)Kasha (Meadow Lake classmate) on: Nov 03, 2023

  • As a psychology student decades ago I needed a minor to graduate. I initially avoided philosophy because I thought it would be too abstract. But then I took Metaphysics with Professor Stack. That changed everything. To this day I credit him with teaching me "how to think". I ultimately took his other two undergraduate courses, always sitting in the front row. He also kindly agreed to serve on my PhD dissertation committee. Later, when my career brought me back to the University of Manitoba I would regularly see him walking on campus, when he was always kind and supportive. His obituary is a good reminder that the number of words used is not a measure of a person's impact. "No flowers, fuss, or gathering": that is so like him. Thank you Professor Stack. - Posted by: Hal Wallbridge (student) on: Oct 21, 2023

  • Michael was such a kind person, with a playful and curious intellect. We will always remember how welcome we and our children felt at Michael and Darlene's home. Whether we were shelling peas by the bushel or feasting on raspberries that Michael had helped us pick at "the property", they were always good times. - Posted by: Isobel and Grant (Friends and colleagues) on: Oct 13, 2023

  • I will try not to fuss as Michael would want so I’ll just say I have many fond memories growing up as a child going over to the Stack house for dinners, and again as a young adult more wonderful dinners in the Higgs and Munro era. I remember a gentle, kind soul who would not hesitate to let loose an unrestrained laugh here and there, which was always genuine and infectious. I remember lots of things but on this day what stands out for whatever reason is the Far Side daily calendar, how he always indulged my dog Rascal with ear rubs on his lap at the table, and how he didn’t enjoy coconut. Hugs to Darlene, Higgs and Munro - Posted by: Susan (Family friend) on: Oct 11, 2023

  • Was fortunate to meet Michael at a few zoo functions and had a lovely conversation while we were hosting a zoo conference. My condolences to Darlene on her loss. Stay strong. - Posted by: Tannis (Coworker / friend of Darlene) on: Oct 08, 2023

  • Michael would always remark on the poems I taped to my office door, or trade stories of our dogs. Our interactions were quiet, and delightful. I’m liked him a great deal, and will think of him often. My condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Brenda Austin-Smith (Colleague ) on: Oct 07, 2023

  • Will always remember seeing Michael walking the dogs around the neighborhood or in the park. So sorry for your loss Darlene.💕 - Posted by: Nancy and Phil King friends (Friends) on: Oct 07, 2023
