With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Eileen. She left us peacefully, surrounded by family who showered her with love.
Eileen will be dearly missed by her husband of 67 years, Barry, and her three daughters, Lois (Marc), Janet (Brian), and Laurie (Ivan). Her grandchildren, Mitch (Erica), Danielle (Reza), Megan, Jessica (Brandyn), Rebecca, Erika (Jordan), Tyler (Shannon), and her first great-grandchild and namesake, Nora June, will forever feel the void left by their cherished "Nanny." Eileen also leaves behind her devoted sister, Pat, her special niece, Lesley (Brian), sister-in-law, Marilyn, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Eileen was born to William and Pearl Lukin and raised on the family farm in Glenella, Manitoba with her brother, Bob, and sister, Pat. At 15, she ventured to Winnipeg to attend high school and business college. Following her graduation, she worked at an insurance company. During this time, she met the love of her life, Barry Smith, and they married in 1956. After raising their three daughters into their teen years, Mom followed her passion for homes and people by becoming a real estate agent in her early 40s, needing to get her driver's license first! Through hard work, patience, and respect for others, Mom excelled in her career for two decades.
When Mom and Dad were just 27, they built their beloved cottage at Bird Lake. Mom would stay there all summer with her young daughters, loving the outdoors and surrounding herself with beautiful flowers which she had a passion for throughout her life. She often said that building the cabin at Bird Lake was the best decision they ever made.
Mom was immeasurably devoted to her family, always working hard to create beautiful meals for the family to enjoy. We will forever cherish Nanny's wonderful cooking and desserts, each of us with our own fond favourites.
In retirement, Mom and Dad became snowbirds in Florida, spending 25 glorious winters on the sunny Gulf Coast, filled with laughter and cherished friends. Mom even took up golf with her typical enthusiasm, learning to play well and discovering a passion later in life.
A year ago, Mom and Dad moved to Dakota House, where Mom found happiness in her new surroundings and the beauty of a flower garden just outside her window.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mom's home care friends, Crystal and Mulina, for their kindness and gracious care.
Mom was the jewel in the heart of our family and, although our hearts are broken, we are grateful for our cherished memories and take comfort in knowing Mom was very happy right until the end of her life at age 90.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
For those who wish, donations can be made in Eileen's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (heartandstroke.ca).
