DAVID MALCOLM REGAN

July 17, 1960 - October 8, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dave Regan, age 63, who passed away peacefully with his loving wife at his bedside, in the early morning of October 8, 2023, at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Ward.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife Mary-Louise of 26 years; son Brandon Adamson and daughter Brianna Adamson and grandchildren; as well as his brother Will (Angi), and many nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.
Dave was predeceased by his father William; mother Isabella; brothers, Ron and Alan.
Dave was born in Montréal, QC. He grew up in the Laval area where he attended Rosemere Catholic Elementary School and Western Laval High School until his graduation in 1978. During his youth Dave’s passion for baseball, hockey, and many other sports, laid the groundwork for his future career in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
Dave loyally served in the CAF for 18 years; first as a Radio Operator from 1979-1985, and then as a Physical Education and Recreation Instructor until his early retirement in 1997. Dave liked to fondly say that he spent the better half of his career on a “sports scholarship”.
Throughout his military career and his service in the CFMWS and other areas of employment, Dave excelled in all that he did. He was an exemplary employee through his steadfast commitment and great work ethic. He had a shining personality that won him the admiration and respect of his colleagues, friends and family who saw first-hand his enthusiasm, craft, wit and charm. Most of all, Dave remained very humble throughout the various achievements in his career such as the CF Sports Award in 2004 for his contributions and dedication to the sport of hockey as a referee.
Through sports Dave made many life-long friends. He was admired for his natural ability and passion for the game of golf. Whether at the Kingston Garrison Golf and Curling Club or the Winnipeg Southwood Golf and Country Club, he enjoyed rounds of golf with “the guys” who helped each other out by providing some helpful tips and engaged in some playful banter followed by a few beers.
Cycling became a passion in Dave’s later life. He joined his friend, neighbour, and colleague Steve Brick on early morning and weekend rides. Oh, the chats and wisecracks that when on between those two! In no time at all, their stories usually involved flat tires, being chased by a dog, or some crashes that bear some war wounds to this very day.
Everyone that knew Dave knew that he loved golf, cycling, hockey, baseball, burgers and fries, pizza, his dogs, Mary-Louise, and the latest gadgets. Not necessarily in that order, lol.
Dave and Mary-Louise enjoyed sunny and warm destinations like Florida, Bahamas, Aruba, to name a few. Alongside Mary-Louise, he enjoyed walks with their dogs through the neighbourhood, trails, parks, and places to swim throughout Kingston, ON, Victoria, BC, and Winnipeg, MB.
After valiantly battling brain cancer, Dave is finally at peace. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
We would like to thank all those from WHRA Wound Care and Palliative Care for their compassionate care.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or to a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I’m really sorry to read about Dave’s passing. We golfed together at Cordova Bay, Gorge Vale and Olympic View then he lived in Victoria. Always a good game, really nice swing, some people you instantly click with and Dave was one of those. Gone too soon but not forgotten. - Posted by: Ross Birtwistle (Golfing buddy) on: Aug 16, 2024

  • I will miss you Dave at my Golf Course, John Blumberg. I will miss your friendship and jokes. Every time you came to golf or visit you would always say to me nice to see you “young lady” which I would respond, you as well “young man”, lol. It was our private joke, well I guess the Breezy Bend boys as well lol. Thank you for always making me smile. I’m so sad you are gone but now you can rest, no more pain. Every time I see the boys I will think of you. RIP Dave, thanks for your friendship. - Posted by: Tracey huston (Friend) on: Oct 19, 2023

  • Dear Mary and family, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I trust that Dave is in a better place, freed of the pain and suffering. It was a privilege to to get to know Dave at the Referee camps the Canadian Armed Forces ran for their members at Base Borden for many years. With his quick witted responses and likeable personality, Dave and I instantly hit it off. Dave was an accomplished referee, a true professional both on and off the ice and I so enjoyed our discussions. The only time I was ever fined over the course of my career was when Dave noticed my skate laces had a black thread running through them. He said that was unacceptable by Military standards and fined me a six pack. It was this type banter and commradrie which Dave was quick to provide and that we will all surely miss. Rest is peace my friend. Dan Marouelli - Posted by: Dan Marouelli (Friend) on: Oct 18, 2023
