Thomas “Tom” Commer passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.
Thomas Andrew Peter Commer, better known to us all as Tom, the youngest of Julie and Hap Commer’s five children, was born on February 5, 1952. Tom grew up in Brandon and attended David Livingstone School and BCI – well, when he wasn’t playing hooky. He became skilled in the area of construction and worked as a drywaller as well as with Behlen Industries.
Tom tried his hand at hunting and fishing. He tracked pheasant for two weeks with success and once it was cooked, his big heart wouldn’t let him eat the poor bird. Tom decided he was better suited to activities such as roller skating and attending teen and community dances. He enjoyed a good party, with family and friends, which I’m sure we can all verify; always dancing and singing to the old rock and roll tunes. Lots of good times were had by all when with Tom.
As an adult, Tom also enjoyed his cars and models. He liked discussing his AMC Gremlins and was very proud of his ’68 Ford Galaxy convertible. When he wasn’t enjoying the wind in his hair, he took to wood carving and burning, playing darts in tournaments, keeping an immaculate lawn, as well as being involved with the Sokol Hall.
Tom later became a father to Belinda and Tony, and then a proud grandfather to Aiden, Adelyn and Jessilyn. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and his dedicated wife was always there for him.
Tom’s memory will live on with his loving wife Darlene; daughter Belinda and granddaughter Jessalyn; son Tony (Ashley) and grandchildren, Aiden and Adelyn; Belinda and Tony’s mother Bonnie; brother Richard (Marg); sisters, Carol (Larry) Grudinski, Sandy Commer (Bert Perey) and Mary-Ann (Doug) Baron; as well as several other extended family members.
The Funeral Service took place at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery Columbarium
Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Tom may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
