WILLIAM MERVIN BOLLEY

After a courageous, three-year battle with glioblastoma, Bill passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, with his family by his side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Kathy, son Matt (Lauren), daughter Sam (Kendal) Boulet, and granddaughter Hannah Bolley.

Sharing in the loss are Bill’s sisters Sharon Furman and Alanna (Paul) Murray and brother Don (Virginia); in-laws Wendy (Wayne) Duchart, Dan (Maureen) Biles, Keith (Debbie) Biles, Randy (Marlene) Biles; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Bill was predeceased by his parents Mervin and Hazel Bolley, his parents-in-law Bill and Anna Biles, and brother-in-law Bob Biles.

Bill was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, on December 27, 1953. After a few moves in Saskatchewan, the Bolley family settled in Brandon, Manitoba, in 1967 where Bill attended Vincent Massey High School and made many lifelong friends. He then worked at various jobs before and after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1982, he began an eight-year career with Child and Family Services as the Unit Co-Ordinator of a group home. Bill attained his Bachelor of Social Work Degree in 1990 and was hired by the Brandon School Division that same year. He was a School Social Worker for the next 23 years, and his caring spirit touched the lives of many students, families, and colleagues. In later years he also enjoyed being a Marriage Commissioner.

Bill met his soulmate Kathy in 1982, and they celebrated 40 years of marriage this past July. Their lives were made full with the addition of their son, Matthew and their daughter, Samantha. Family always came first, and Bill’s summers off were spent enjoying quality time with his children. He was fiercely proud of his family, and he was the energy source we all tapped into for love, fun and advice.

Over the years, Bill was involved with the Kinsmen Club, the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, Brandon Youth Soccer (coach) and other professional associations.

He lived a full life with varied interests. He started golfing as a young boy in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and his love of the game lasted a lifetime. He was a long-time member at the Shilo Country Club. It was there he achieved his hole-in-one, became Senior Men’s Club Champion in 2017, and where he played his final round in 2022.

Bill also had a passion for reading, enjoyed journaling, and was proud to have written his own novel in 2009. He was a Wheat Kings season ticket holder for many years, performed in live theatre with Mecca Productions and also loved to cook. Bill and Kathy shared a love of music and travel and were fortunate to go to numerous live concerts and musicals over the years, as well as enjoy some wonderful trips.

Bill had an outgoing personality with a quick wit and a great sense of humour. He was a doer who always found it easier to give help than to receive it and offered kindness without judgment to those in need.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Victoria Inn, 3550 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, MB, Grand Salon. Rev. Doug Craig will officiate. A private family interment at Brandon Cemetery will take place at a later date.

In Bill’s honour, in lieu of flowers, the family encourages random acts of kindness for someone in need. Bill had hoped to reach his 70th birthday this year, so on Dec. 27th celebrate with him and raise a glass to the Heavens.

He saw the best in everyone and gave the best he had.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I had the privilege of working with Bill while I was a counsellor at Vincent Massey High School. He was always caring, full of warmth and humour when working with staff or students. Bill was the person whom I would phone if I wanted a second perspective or support in handling issues. He was always very responsive and thoughtful. Bill made this world a better place for many! - Posted by: Alison Clement (Colleague ) on: Oct 31, 2023
