HARRY JOHN DIAKIW

It is with heavy hearts that the family announce the peaceful passing of Harry John Diakiw, with family by his side after a short illness at the age of 87 on October 20, 2023.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Annie and brother Alec.

Left to mourn and cherish his memory are wife of nearly 61 years, Shirley; his son David (Joanne); daughter Andrea and his one and only grandchild Madyson. He also leaves behind his brother Peter (Penny); his sister Jeanette and numerous other family and friends.

Harry was born on June 20, 1936 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended grade 12 at Norquay High School. Following graduation, he started employment with CN Rail as an electrician apprentice at Fort Rouge Shops. He graduated to Electrician in 1960 and for a number of years was involved in the IBEW. He was later promoted to electrical foreman in Transcona and soon after, moved into the regional electrical foreman and general supervisor of maintenance. Harry retired from CN in 1991 after 37 years of service.

Harry spent much of his retirement travelling with his wife and friends. One of his favourite places to be was at the cottage in Lester Beach, Manitoba. Those that knew Harry well can attest to his kind heart and his natural ability to make everyone feel welcomed and at home. Always the life of the party, his presence will be forever missed but fondly remembered.

At his wishes, Harry has been cremated and the family will be holding a private service at a later date.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at HSC.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Harry's name to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.

  • Condolences to the Diakiw family. I had the pleasure of having a cottage across the street from Harry and Shirley for the past 24 years. Harry was the best neighbor and always ready to help with anything I needed. It was nice I got to visit with him about a month ago at the cottage. RIP Harry. - Posted by: Thomas Harpley (Neighbor at lester ) on: Oct 29, 2023
