MARGARET JOAN BAKER

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Margaret Joan Baker at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Surrounded by her family, she made her final journey home to the Lord.

Joan was born in St. Boniface Hospital on May 19, 1934, to Margaret Evelyn and Leonard Frank Baker. She lived her younger years on a farm in Shoal Lake Municipality. Attended Culross, Islay (Vista) and Rossburn schools. After the passing of her mother, Joan moved to her father's in Winnipeg where she attended Glenlawn Collegiate for a short time before returning to Vista.

In 1951 Joan married the love of her life, Richard “Dickie” Baker, they were married for 59 years. They lived behind the store in Vista, Manitoba. She kept busy with the United Church in Vista and Rossburn, working in the post office with Dickie and volunteering on numerous local committees and groups. Joan enjoyed being President of the United Church Women’s group, helping the congregation and community, and working in home care. She loved to dance, curl, give toni perms, make quilts for her loved ones, play cards and share meals with friends, host family for special occasions, and travel with her sister Beverly. She loved animals including her three cats, and many of her friend's horses and dogs.

After Dickie’s passing, Joan moved to be closer to her family. She lived near Debbie in Brandon’s west end for a few years before moving to Sokol Manor. While there, she enjoyed meeting new friends, fun day trips and making happy memories. Thank you to Sokol Manor and BRHC for the wonderful care she received in her final years and days.

Joan was predeceased by her mother, father, and stepmother; her husband Dick, sister Beverly Bell and brother-in-law Norman Bell, as well as many of her close friends.

She leaves to mourn her daughter Debra Taylor (Ross), son David Baker (Mary Ellen), granddaughter Tammy McIntosh (Jared), great-grandsons, Tyler (Niomi) and Owen (Maddy), grandson Trevor Taylor (Cynthia), Daly, Brooklyn (Brett), and nieces and nephews.

Granny - you were loved and will be missed.

At Joan’s request, there will be no funeral. The family will hold a private graveside ceremony at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
