IOULIA (JULIE) PAPPAS

(nee BANAKOU)

In Loving Memory of Ioulia “Julie” Pappas, formerly Zorzos (nee Banakou), who passed away in Virden, Manitoba on November 15, 2023, at the age of 84, happily surrounded by many of her close family and friends.

Julie was predeceased by her siblings Dimitri, Yiorgo, Evridiki, and Panagiota. She is survived by her sister Eleni, and children Jacob (Marianne), Stella, and Christos, along with six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three step-children Bob (Angela), Gina (Terry), and Alex (Gillian), along with eight step-grandchildren, and seven step great-grandchildren.

Julie was born to Nikolaos Banakos and Panagiota Banakou (nee Papathakou) in Skala, Lakonia, Greece on October 30, 1939. At age four she was orphaned and raised by her beloved brother Dimitri and his wife Marigoula alongside their three daughters. Julie was married to her husband Marinosin in 1960 and together they immigrated to Canada in 1970 with their two children, Jacob and Stella. In Canada they welcomed their third child Christos, and continued to raise their family here. In 1991, Julie suffered the loss of her husband Marinos. She married her second husband Constantine (Dino) Pappas in 1994 and together they enjoyed the pleasures of their blended family. Julie will be remembered for her faith, her passion and a profound love for all her friends and family. Her eyes sparkled, reflecting a life dedicated to hard work, nurturing meals, and boundless generosity. And of course we can’t forget her good humour and laughter!

Julie’s home was a haven where laughter echoed alongside the aroma of her delicious Greek recipes. She instilled in all her family the values of togetherness, emphasizing the importance of sharing meals and creating lasting memories. Her memory lives on through the generations she touched, a tribute to the enduring impact of a woman who embraced life with an open heart and an unwavering commitment to those she held dear. Julie’s love, kindness, humour and memorable cooking will forever be etched into our hearts as a cherished legacy.

We would like to give our sincere thanks and gratitude to all those who helped in Julie’s care including family, friends and health professionals alike. A special thank you to all the wonderful staff at The Sherwood Home in Virden, who supported Julie and her family until the very end.
