OLIVE KOWAL
With great sadness, but deep appreciation for her longevity and loving impact on many people, the family of Olive Kowal announces that her life journey has ended in its 101st year.
Olive was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul, and is survived by her children, Joanna (Robert), Greg (Karin), and her grandchildren, Stephen (Anita), Emma, and Matthew (Kali).
Olive emigrated from Ukraine as a young girl and grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was deeply involved in the Ukrainian-Canadian community and remained proud of her heritage throughout her life. Olive enjoyed acting in plays, dancing, and singing. She often participated in community events.
It was at one of these events that Olive met her husband, Paul. They knew immediately that they were meant for one another and soon married. With Joanna’s arrival, and then Greg’s, Mom dedicated herself to her home and family.
With her husband an officer in the Canadian Forces, Mom made a home in many locations, including a four-year stint in Germany. There, Mom learned to speak the language well enough to carry on a conversation.
Once back in Canada, Mom volunteered at her local church, where she looked after the sacristy. As well, Mom was asked to act as secretary for Winnipeg’s Ukrainian Women’s Federation (UWF) because she was fluent in both Ukrainian and English. Mom remained a devoted mother and wife, creating a safe and loving home for her family. She was an excellent cook, known especially for her perogies, borscht, paska, and pies.
A people person, Mom had a warm heart and a “wicked” sense of humour. She was gregarious, compassionate, and caring. Mom’s life was fueled by her family, her faith in God, and all the wonderful people who were part of her journey. She will be missed.
Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her Home Instead caregivers for their kindness and support over her final years and to the wonderful staff at Parkland on the Glen.
Visitation will be 10:30 -11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, with liturgy at 11:00 AM and reception to follow at noon. The location is Turner and Porter Funeral Home, 1981 Dundas St. W, Mississauga, Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Mom, we love you. Your spirit will live forever in our hearts.

I will never forget the sincere and friendly relationship I shared with your mom Ollie. Your dad Paul and I were both meteorologists who worked and shared many common interests like gardening, computers, Ukrainian history. There never was a shortage of laughs and good times . Loved having coffee with them both or going out for dinners and their generosity was so special and genuine. May they never be forgotten and may God find a special place in Heaven for them both.. Dear Joanna and Greg and your families. My sincerest condolences at the passing of your dear mother. I have known her for many decades as we both were very involved in promoting our Ukrainian language and heritage we both belonged to St Basils church so we saw each other often. She always encouraged me and as a true friend supported any project I undertook. She was such a kind and lovely person. She often spoke of her daughter in Toronto and with such pride and love. I knew she went to Toronto to be closer to her family. I have always held her in very high esteem and I was deeply moved when I read of her passing. God blessed her with a long life where she was able to see her grandchildren grow up. The world lost a beautiful, intelligent, and wonderful person in your Mom. She is with our Lord and in eternal splendour!! Vichnaya Pamyat!! Mary Shurraw - Posted by: Mary Shurraw (Friend) on: Dec 02, 2023
