It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Filomena Distasio on December 4, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Born in Balvano, Italy, on March 9, 1938, Filomena was nurtured by the love of her parents. Her youth was spent in Balvano, where she played an integral role in the upbringing of her siblings: Elvira, Rosetta, Lucia, Francesco, and Antonio. It is in Balvano Italy where Filomena met Donato (deceased 2004) and they wed on (March 20, 1960). Shortly afterwards, they made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada and began their life together in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Settling in Winnipeg marked the beginning of a beautiful chapter for Filomena and Donato, who, by 1975, had welcomed four daughters into their lives; Costantina, Maria, Giuseppina and Donatella. To those who knew her, Filomena’s daughters were her world. Her tireless efforts reflected in her hard work, ensuring the best for her family, always accompanied by an abundance of love, sacrifice, and immense pride.
Filomena is survived by her four children: Costantina (Bill), Maria (Martin), Giuseppina and Donatella (David). Her passing also leaves a void in the hearts of her six grandchildren: D.J. (Keri), John (Laura), Daniele (Adrian), Jessica, Simon, and Olivia, and her four great-grandchildren; Brody, Emmy, Adam, and Sebastian.
Filomena leaves behind many grieving relatives in Italy and Winnipeg, a testament to the profound impact she had on countless lives. May this cherished soul rest in peace and forever be remembered for her love, warmth, and kindness.
Our heartfelt gratitude extends to the Holy Family Nursing Home. In lieu of donations, please direct contributions to Holy Rosary Church, a place of profound significance to Filomena’s faith. Special thanks are extended to Father Sam for his attentive care, preserving the sanctity of Filomena’s wishes.
Services will be held Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue. 10:00 a.m. - Viewing and Condolences. 11:00 a.m. - Funeral Mass.
Entombment will take place following Mass at Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley Street.
Please join us after the entombment for a reception at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.

Giuseppina Teta and Filomena knew each other from Balvano. They remained friends, although one migrated to Winnipeg and the other to Montreal. They would talk on the phone regularly, talking about old time in Balvano. There was a lot of laughs and happy memories. They were fortunate to have met up a few years ago in Montreal, where they spent the day talking and laughing (thank you Josie). It is with heavy hearts we say good bye to a wonderful woman. Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your mother. I remember her fondly from our many visits to each other's homes as we were growing up. We also met at most Christenings, Socials and other festive functions. Over the years I had many opportunities to visit with her when I was working downtown and would see her in Winnipeg Square. Your mother was most proud of her daughters, and always prefaced mentioning all your names by saying "my Maria", not just Maria. I always found that so endearing. Take comfort in having her reach such a good age, and that she is now resting eternally with your father and their other dear friends from Balvano who forged a new life in Canada.
