Joao “John” Francisco Tavares passed away with his family by his side on December 19, 2023 at the age of 83 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Karen Tavares with whom he spent the last 46 years, his son John “B.J.” Tavares (Ashley Tavares); and his granddaughter Georgia Tavares whom he loved and adored so very much. He is also survived by his sister, brother, and their families. He will also be missed by his close friends who he enjoyed spending time with at the lake.
Joao was born in São Miguel, Açores and moved to Winnipeg in 1973 where he met and built a life with Karen. Together they started JFT Typewriters and Office Equipment which they owned and operated for 43 years. Joao was an accomplished technician and enjoyed restoring vintage typewriters and even managed to complete his last typewriter as a gift for Georgia, a month before his passing. He enjoyed gardening and fishing for Goldeye in the summer with his family. He also took great joy in watching the Winnipeg Jets and had fond memories of attending playoff whiteout games with his family.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer in the Whiteshell Provincial Park.
Memorial Donations may be made in Joao Tavares name to Variety, the Childrens Charity of Manitoba. They can be mailed to 440A Don Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0S4 or can be made online at www.varietymanitoba.com.
Our family would like to send a special thank you to all the staff at the Health Sciences Centre, GA3 Stepdown Unit, in Winnipeg. Joao was very thankful and appreciative to them for all that they did while he was in their care. They treated him and his family with great respect.

It is with great sorry that I heard of the passing of John. He was a very dignified individual and a most wonderful individual. He will indeed join the angels when his soul rises. I would be surprised to hear anyone say anything other than that. I give my sincerest condolences to Karen, she being a strong partner for years at his very side. - Posted by: Harry Rosenbaum (Professional Assistant ) on: Dec 30, 2023
