ANNA ELIZABETH HOEMSEN

(nee SZORADI)

September 20, 1932 -

February 8, 2024

Anna Elizabeth Hoemsen (known to many as Anne) of Elkhorn, Manitoba passed away at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre, Moosomin on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at the age of 91.

She was predeceased by her parents, James and Anna Szoradi; infant brother, Harold Rudolph; two brothers, Mike Szoradi and Jim Szoradi and daughter, Camelia Sigurdson.

Anne is survived by her children, Ray (Joan) Hoemsen, Marcell Hoemsen, Slade (Sharon) Hoemsen, and Alicia Hoemsen, son-in-law, Chuck Sigurdson, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and sister, Kay (Gary) Lally.

Anne was born on the family farm near Elkhorn on September 20, 1932. When she first started school she only spoke Hungarian, but that didn’t stop her from learning English, completing her studies and graduating from high school in 1952. She enjoyed sports, music, reading and was quite athletic. After high school, she worked for MTS as a telephone operator in Virden.

Anne married in 1954 and started her family in 1955. She was a devoted mother to her children, who were her greatest pride and joy. Anne treasured every precious moment with her grandchildren. From baking treats to having the city grandkids spend weeks at her house in the summer, her unwavering love and selflessness were evident in every aspect of her life. She always had a smile on her face.

She enjoyed cooking, canning and baking – her pies and butter tarts were definitely worth waiting for. Around the holidays it was a time to enjoy her Hungarian pastries and dainties. She also loved gardening.

She was a compassionate individual who lived her life with purpose and dedication, always putting the needs of others before her own. She lovingly cared for her aging parents with devotion and tenderness. She provided unwavering support for her daughter, Alicia, on countless trips to help animals across southwestern Manitoba for over a decade.

A service to celebrate her life was held on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Redpath Funeral Home in Melita. Internment was at the Elkhorn Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Elkwood Manor Personal Care Home for the care they provided, as well as the Redpath Funeral Home for their assistance.

Donations may be given in her memory to the Elkwood Manor PCH, Box 70, Elkhorn, MB R0M 0N0 or to Cats TNR & Rescue (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/cats-tnr-and-rescue/).
