FRANK (FRANC) POREDOS

April 7, 1933 - February 7, 2024

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Frank Poredos of Winnipeg on February 7, 2024, at the age of 90 years.

Beloved husband of 62 years to Alice Marie. Loving father to Annette, Frank Jr. and Emily (Mike); and son-in-law Kelly. Proud grandfather to Stephanie, Trevor, Jessica, Dylan and Samantha, and great-grandfather to Nathan.

Besides his immediate family, he leaves to mourn his siblings, Anton (Anna), Marija (Srecko), Joze (Emma), Pavel (Ljube), Katica (Gusti), Alojz (Nada), Olga (Pepe); sisters-in-law, Justica and Christina as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

He was predeceased by his daughter Cathy; brothers, Ignac, Martin, and Ivan; sisters, Anika and Vera; brother-in-law Vanek (Ivan); and parents, Marija and Franc.

Being the second eldest of 13 children dad was born in the small village of Izakovci, Slovenia to Franc and Marija Poredos. In his early 20s, he immigrated to Canada in the hopes of establishing a new life. Hard work and determination enabled him to learn a new language, build a new foundation and find his true love, Marie. They married in 1962 and soon started a family. Most of his early life in Winnipeg was spent living in Transcona. Although times were tough, he always had employment whether it be working in the steel factory, lumberjacking, or construction. He really found his niche when he got into the real estate rental business and took pride in his apartment buildings.

Dad was a strong, proud, and generous man who was always willing to lend a hand. He kept busy with his many activities and projects. He loved to build things, garden around the house, and go fishing. Never a man to sit idle, the only time you would see him relaxing was when he was watching the news or wrestling.

Dad loved to travel, whether by car to the USA or back to his homeland in Slovenia to see his family at least a dozen times. As he got older, and travel became impossible, he always stayed in contact with his brothers and sisters through skype. His passion for gardening and cooking lasted throughout his life.

In spite of life’s challenges, his faith always carried him through. Being one of the founding members of Our Lady of Lourdes church, he was a devout Catholic. The church was a very important part of his life and the friends he had through the Slovenian church community were very dear to him. Lasting memories were made at the picnic grounds where good music, food and friends were not in short supply. Dad was always a social person; he especially liked his outings at Garden City to have good conversations over coffee with his buddies as he did when he lived at East Park Lodge.

Prayers will be held on Tuesday, February 20 at 6:00 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Wednesday, February 21 at 10:00 a.m. both in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 95 MacDonald Ave. Burial will follow in Transcona Cemetery, 5014 Dugald Rd.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
