KEN JONES

July 1, 1946- February 16, 2024

One year and 16 days after saying goodbye to his love Lynda, we said goodbye to our Dad and Grampa, Ken, following a brief illness.

Left with many years of memories are his daughters: Kathy (Doug Kisil) and their kids, Max (Hailey), Sam (Tori) and Jack; Kelly (Jeff Kergen) and their kids, Avary (Isaiah), Annika, Kennedy and Nathan; brother Don; sister-in-law Ruth, brother-in-law Bill and nieces, Leslie and Sandra, and nephew Rick (Kelley).

Ken grew up in West and East Kildonan and attended Miles Macdonell Collegiate where he met his future bride Lynda and worked hard to make her his sweetheart. He followed her around and eventually swept in and rescued her when she was stranded with a flat tire, and the rest was history.

As a chartered accountant, Ken worked in the printing industry his entire career, making a comfortable life for his family. Ken and Lynda lived in the same house in Valley Gardens for over 50 years where good times were had around the pool, and many dinner parties and card games with friends were held.

Ken spent many days over the last 50 or more years at Rossmere Country Club, both on the golf course and curling rink, where he spent time with lifelong friends and met many new ones. While he was quite the skilled golfer, there were many stories of flying golf clubs and colourful language on the course.

His favourite place of all though has always been the bush, hunting and fishing. He had many trips with his buddies and took great pride in teaching Doug and Max everything he knew about deer hunting with a bow and arrow.

Despite the sometimes gruff exterior, we all knew his heart was soft and how much he loved his family, especially when the grandkids came. He jumped at the chance to babysit the boys, watched many hockey and baseball games and loved fishing with Max, Sam, and Jack. Ken and Lynda had an annual spring break trip to Grand Forks with the girls. Avary and Annika will always remember listening to "Grampa music" on repeat for the whole drive followed by shopping until they dropped and playing "Old Maid" in the hotel room.

He selflessly cared for Lynda during her illness and has missed her every moment of the past 381 days. He continued to push on, learning how to make soup that she used to make for her girls, and made the best of his remaining time even though we knew he would always have a broken heart.

Thank you to all his friends who visited during his last days. Thank you to Dr. Kuegle for the house visits, to Dr. Kim Wiebe and the palliative care program for their support.

Ken has requested that there be no funeral, but that friends, family and neighbours gather to send him off with one last "cheers" with his rye and coke. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, February 23 at Rossmere Country Club, 925 Watt Street, arrival at 3:00 p.m. with a short program to begin at 3:30 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • After 21 years of working together it’s hard not to be reminded of you every day. One of my bunnies was being funny this weekend and I started to cry because normally I would tell you about it and then you would tell me how ‘rabbits belong in a stew, not running around a house,’ and I would tell you how objectively incorrect you are. Then we would talk about Alone and that woman who went a little loopy and turned her rabbits into puppets. I was walking on some treacherous ice the other morning and I got choked up thinking about when it was slippery like this and I was 8 months pregnant and I tried to walk to work. A vehicle pulled up beside me, the window rolled down, and I heard, “Get in you dumb s***! Then you proceeded to lecture me all the way to the office about how I was to call you when it was dangerous to walk. I had trouble remembering where I put something the other day and I said to my husband, ‘Ken said CRS kicks in at 60. I’m only 50. It’s too early for this!” I think ‘Ken’ references are always going to be a part of my vernacular. Every time I see pictures of my hunting and ice fishing family members I think of you. Every time I see a cool tree stand video I want to send it to you. You were a best friend to me and are massively missed! Ruby. PS: I have your butt cushion. - Posted by: RUBY POMMER (Friend) on: Feb 29, 2024

  • I am sure Ken will catch the one that got away... again and again. My condolences to the family... I will miss his laugh. bp. - Posted by: Brian Pelletier (workmate) on: Feb 23, 2024

  • Was sorry to hear of Ken’s passing. Met him at Rossmere’s junior curling in the 1960’s. This led to a lifelong friendship which carried through our teen years, later marriage, children. Remember so many get-together with the East Kildonan gang. Sometimes at Whytewold and Ponemah. Through work I and Lori and our children moved to Calgary and now are in Ottawa. Wish I could be with you, Kathy and Kelly, on Friday. My sincere sympathy and I will be thinking of you. - Posted by: Ray Ryan (Friend) on: Feb 21, 2024

  • Worked with Ken for many years. Loved to hear his stories of his hunting and fishing adventures. He also had many stories of his family. He will be truely missed by many. - Posted by: Pam Pullen (Co worker/friend ) on: Feb 18, 2024
