RODNEY RAY SLAWSON

Rodney Ray Slawson left us on February 23, 2024 in Oakville. He was 66 years old.

A cameraman/editor for CBC National News – this proud prairie boy (Brandon raised) began his career in Manitoba (CK-X T.V) and Saskatchewan and ended it three decades later in Toronto.

Rod loved breaking news; taking risky assignments without being reckless. He never refused a ‘shoot’.

There were some awards and accolades along the way; the thrill of pinning a ‘mic’ on Gordie Howe and Joni Mitchell.

In a glib business where sound bites often become their own reward, Rod stood out as a listener.

He loved Chicago (the band); Detroit (the Wings) and San Francisco (the Giants); all political debates, cooking without a recipe and anything Ken Burns.

He scaled many medical hurdles with Sheila as his fiercest advocate. Rod’s love for all his ‘girls’ kept him going: an unconditional joy in his ninth inning.

Devastated by the loss of this decent, kind and humble man are his spouse Sheila Manese; his mother Arvelle (predeceased by his father Murray 2003); daughters Brianne and Cari; step-daughter Kira (James) and grandson Caspian; brothers Rick and Randal; cousins Yvonne, Don and Kyle.

2024 will become our year of magical thinking.

Even the devoted Sgt Pepper (his remaining fur buddy) waits by the door for Rod to reappear.

We are grateful to those doctors who offered us both talent and compassion.

A drumroll for Drs S. Pandeya, R.Mao, A.Lo, M.Paikin, and M.Heffernan (OTMH); the entire cath lab team at Trillium Health Partners: Drs. B. Singh, R.Watson, G.Puley, and J.Paikin. So many medical and personal cheerleaders to thank! (Erin, Bianca, Jennifer, Evelyn, Barb, Ewa, Ramy, Jerry, Devin, Deb, Diana, Deborah, Linda and Ramandeep) please take a bow.

Rod hated being the centre of attention so there will be no funeral.

Expressions of sympathy can be sent online to Oakview Funeral Home by Arbor Memorial in Oakville. A gesture in Rod’s name to the Oakville Milton Humane society would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I am sorry to hear of Rod's passing. I worked with Rod at CKX -TV in Brandon. Rod was a big Detroit Red Wing and San Francisco Giant fan. Rod became a mentor I looked up to when I started working at CKX. Rod was gracious and patient "showing me the ropes" of the TV business. We had fun times playing baseball, jogging and lifting weights when I lived with him in Saskatoon. Rest in Peace my friend. Lawrence Link - Posted by: Lawrence Link (Friend) on: Sep 11, 2024

  • I am greatly saddened by Rod's passing. We had such great times working together at CKX.I will always remember visiting with Rod and his girls in Saskatoon and Rod's passion for sports, even correcting sportscasters in their scripts-noone knew The Giants or The Wings better. I'm sorry that I have kept in touch with the many changes in his life. Rest Well Rod! - Posted by: Ray Smith (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2024
