JANET EVELYN REDGWELL

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Janet Evelyn Redgwell (née Scott) on February 22, 2024, at the age of 90.

Predeceased by her husband James, she is survived by her sister Lois, her daughters, Catherine Redgwell (and Steve Weatherill) and Elaine Redgwell (and Peter Sandberg); and granddaughter Chelsea Sandberg.

A native of Winnipeg, Janet attended Queenston, Robert H. Smith and Kelvin High schools, then obtained her BA from United College (now University of Winnipeg) and her BEd from the University of Manitoba. She then embarked on her career as an educator in the Winnipeg School Division, interrupted only by the arrival of her daughters and several years in Edmonton and then Vancouver (where she also taught). One of Janet’s greatest joys was encouraging young minds to flourish, and she had a special interest in early childhood education (N-3), deciding to pursue a further degree in early childhood education while teaching. That interest persisted as she left the classroom for the administrative phase of her career, first as a consultant in early childhood education and then successively as principal of several elementary schools in the Winnipeg School Division. Interviewed at the time of her retirement, Janet reflected: ‘I find young children absolutely fascinating. One of the highlights of my career has been learning about them, and then being able to take that knowledge and make some difference, whether as a consultant or a principal.’

During retirement, Janet and Jim lived in Teulon for a number of years, where amongst other things her retirement gift of a set of golf clubs was put to very good use. Their small acreage there also provided ample scope for her to pursue her love of gardening. Janet and Jim were able to do more travelling too, roaming from coast to coast in North America, as well as frequent visits to Europe.

Janet returned to Winnipeg during her final years where, as throughout her life, she has been blessed with wonderful, caring friends and family who brought much joy to her daily life even as ill health increasingly restricted her activities.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Victoria Hospital for the care and compassion received by Janet and her family.

It is Janet’s express wish that no formal funeral service takes place, with private interment of her ashes at Elmwood Cemetery in the family plot. A gathering of friends and family to celebrate her life will take place at a later date.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I just met Janet in the past few years at exercise classes in Charleswood. A small group of us would meet for lunch once a month. Always enjoyed Janet’s sense of humour and her company. - Posted by: Lynn Greaves (Friend) on: Mar 04, 2024

  • I had the privilege of working with Janet when she was a Primary Consultant and I was a new Principal. We were able to establish a series of Young Authors Conferences, encouraging children to become writers. When Janet became a Principal we began the Wednesday South Side lunches, an informal opportunity for colleagues to share experience and information. Janet encouraged people to be their best and she made a difference. - Posted by: Carole Wylie (colleague and friend) on: Mar 02, 2024
