LEAH SCHWARTZ

October 8, 1950 - February 28, 2024

With tears and breaking hearts, we announce the untimely death of our sister, sister-in-law, aunt and great aunt, in Costa Rica.

Leah lived her life on her terms, with joy and exploration.

Predeceased by her parents, Betty and Mayer Schwartz. Survived by her sister and brother-in-law Toni and Abe Berenhaut, in Winnipeg, and her brother Ron, in the Ottawa area; nephew and niece, Kenneth Berenhaut and Cindy Suerken (North Carolina) and Arlene and Jeff Lefeele (California).

The North End of Jewish Winnipeg could not contain her desire to see the world. She became involved in the Garment Industry, and was a self-taught Textile expert. She spent most of her working life in Montreal, and worked in the Orient with many different people.

Costa Rica was one of her favourite countries to visit. She travelled with a wonderful group of friends. We are grateful that her last days were surrounded by love from these amazing women.

There is to be no funeral but there will be a Celebration of Life in the spring. One here and one in her home of Hudson, Quebec.

We gratefully decline flowers, but if you so desire Leah’s charity of choice is Arthritis West Island Self Help Association (A.W.I.S.H.), 640, boulevard Lakeshore, Suite 103 Dorval, Province of Quebec H9S 2B6.

  • Dear family. In a longer story I’d tell you how I happened on the news of Leah’s death. I am stunned. I have such warm and lovely memories of Leah. We had fun. The fun of working at Nova. Volunteering to play at “Shops” to try on clothes, to buy clothes at very reasonable prices. There is that element. Leah had her expertise too. Such a brave lady. A huge strong spirit which I still admire. I had stopped volunteering in that section of Nova and I was spending more time in Scotland. I’m sorry I missed any celebration of her life. Goodbye Leah thank you for the fun. Pat - Posted by: Patricia MacGeachy (I volunteered at Nova with Leah. We had fun . I started in the original shop on the other side of th) on: Sep 15, 2025

  • Sweet Leah, when we met in Costa Rica this February, we had an instant connection. We held hands as we talked and interlinked arms as we walked together. The brief moments we shared were filled with a sense of ease, a sense of peace and a sense of joy. We whispered and giggled as if we had known each other all our lives. God bless you and keep you close to His Heart. You will always be in mine. Rest easy, Leah. Mary Gedeon Harvan. - Posted by: Mary Harvan (New Friend) on: Mar 16, 2024

  • To say that you are my hero, my sunshine, one of my dearest friends, is not saying enough. The times we shared will be forever etched in my heart. I feel so blessed to have known you, to have spent so much time with you, to have been your friend. The world won’t be the same without you. Nor will our road trips.
