BARBARA ELIZABETH CODVILLE

(nee SIMONITE)

July 20, 1937 - February 19, 2024

Born in Winnipeg, Barbara passed gently into God’s loving embrace while asleep at home in Canmore, Alberta on February 19, 2023, with daughter Shawn and pet poodle Cole at her side.

Barbara will be deeply missed by her children, Shawn Biggings (Russ) and Grant Biggings (Martina), brother Ted Simonite, twin sister Beverly Goodwin, stepchildren, Jim Codville (Linda), Susan Turney (Don), Dorothy Codville, Robert Codville (Gail) and many dearly loved nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her mother Olive, father Russ Simonite, stepmother Rosemary, husband Bruce, and stepdaughter Elaine.

She was known for her outgoing personality, kind heart, and forthright integrity. In the 1960s and 1970s, while raising Shawn and Grant on her own, Barbara pursued a career in real estate, and became one of the top agents in Winnipeg. She had a keen sense of style, always impeccably dressed for every occasion. Her favourite pastimes included boating, tennis, and golf, entertaining, and travel. Her immense love of animals, once prompted a friend to comment that “if there is such a thing as reincarnation, she would want to return as one of Barbara’s dogs.”

Barbara and Bruce lived in Florida for many years before moving to Victoria, BC in 2014. Following Bruce’s death in 2017, Barbara moved to Canmore, Alberta to be closer to Shawn.

The family is eternally grateful to special caregivers, Isabelle and Brian and the many lovely Canmore health care providers.

Cremation has taken place. Barbara’s ashes will be interred at Elmwood Cemetery later in the spring.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • The links between Barbara and the Bowles family go back to before she was born. Her mother Olive and dad Russ were close friends of my mom, Frances, and dad, Richard. Then, her stepmother, Rosemary was a law partner of my dad, while Russ and dad remained close friends. Those links continue today. For the last 50 years we have had the Simonite family cottage at Keewatin complete with two matching bedrooms atop the boathouse for twins, Beverly and Barbara. While my first memories of Barbara are of meeting her on a visit to the Simonite cottage, I knew her best as arguably Winnipeg's premier real estate agent. Her integrity, class, and insistence all in a transaction were treated openly and fairly followed solidly in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, (C.E. Simonite) and had sellers seeking her out as the go-to agent and buyers closing deals with confidence. The Bowles send condolences on the loss of this wonderful lady to all Simonites, Biggings, and Codvilles. - Posted by: Sheldon and Penny Bowles (Family Friend) on: Mar 16, 2024
