It is with great sadness the family of Dr. Gregory Thomas Lee share the news of his passing in Ingersoll, Ontario on March 12, 2024, at the age of 52, after a five year battle with cancer.
He is lovingly missed by his wife Dr. Michelle Liu of Winnipeg, Manitoba, mother Gloria Lee of Ingersoll, sister Laura Steffler, her husband Mark and their adoring daughter Gracie Steffler, along with his in-laws, Dr. JiuChun Liu and YingHau Zhao, his brother-in-law Dr. XiaoLong Liu, his wife ChunHong Wang and their son Zhong Liu. Greg was predeceased by his proud father Stephen Thomas Wilson Lee (2018), his grandparents, Tommy and Edith Lee and Clarry and Edna Platt.
Greg was born in Woodstock, Ontario and grew up in Ingersoll where he received a great start to his academic career at Princess Anne School, Victory Memorial School and ICDI. He received his Bachelor of Mathematics with Joint Honours Computer Science and Pure Mathematics with Distinction from the University of Waterloo. He attended the University of Alberta (UA) for his Master’s and PhD Degrees. Greg’s post graduate studies took him to the University of Wisconsin. Greg loved his years teaching and completing research on abstract algebra (group rings) as a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematical Science at Lakehead University. He valued his friendships with Dr. Andrew Dean and all of his colleagues. He also had the opportunity of spending many summers and sabbaticals in Italy and UA to work on research with Drs. Ernesto Spenelli and Sudarshan Sehgal. Greg was an accomplished author of the book Group Identities on Units and Symmetric Units of Group Rings and then went on to write the textbook Abstract Algebra. Both books were published by Springer. Greg enjoyed playing a game of bridge especially with Don Cattani, Steve Russo, and the entire circle of friends in Thunder Bay. He was a Silver Life Master. Greg was an avid Blue Jays fan and went to games whenever he was in the Toronto area. Greg also enjoyed going to the movies with his good friends in Ingersoll, Paul and Christy Benedict and their girls.
The family would like to thank Drs. Vincent, Sondhi, and Gordon, the very caring and efficient Oxford County Palliative Care Team and the Saint Elizabeth Nurses.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Purrfect Companions of Norfolk or Woodstock Hospital Foundation Palliative Care Unit would be appreciated by the family.
