MIRIAM (MIGGIE) LAMPE

Miriam Lampe – Miggie to those of more than a passing acquaintance – passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024. Miggie was pre-deceased by her husband Walter and younger son Yale, and is survived by her older son Jonathan, his wife Dana, and their sons William (Taara) and James (Emily).

Miggie was born in 1930 and grew up, and flourished, in Winnipeg's north end with her three siblings (Lucy Rifkin, Issie Coop and Nathan Coop). Like her mother (Rose Zeitlin), she was a woman of formidable personal strength and conviction. She excelled academically and, with her Bachelor and Master in Social Work, pursued a career in the public and private sectors, focusing significantly on policy work related to an aging population.

Miggie was part of her community – volunteering at almost every Winnipeg festival, attending classes at the Rady Centre, engaging with her bridge and book clubs, and supporting not-for-profit initiatives through her philanthropy. She touched and was part of countless lives and cherished her time and relationships with those she considered to be her friends.

Miggie also was an individual of remarkable independence. She had strong views about most things, which she wasn't afraid of expressing. Some may remember her decades ago on the street in front of Dr. Morgenthauler's clinic, supporting access to abortion. Into her 90's, she lived on her own in her own home and tended to her garden. Her ability to do so, even though the isolation of COVID, was made possible with the support of friends and family who recognized the importance to her of that independence.

Miggie concluded her life, as she had lived it, on her own terms.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery, 2605 McPhillips Street in Winnipeg.

Friends and family are welcome to visit with Dana and Jonathan at home in Toronto on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, between 2:00 - 9:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Miggie would have appreciated donations to The Lampe Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation.

  • It is now July 15, I have just heard of Miggie’s passing. To her son and his family and to her many friends, I offer my sincere condolences. Miggie was a generous and kind friend. One could always have an interesting conversation along with a good game of bridge with Maggie. It was my pleasure and privilege to have met her. - Posted by: Lucille Bisignano (Bridge friend) on: Jul 15, 2024
