GLEN THOMPSON MONK

I was born in our farm house near Ninette, MB, November 8, 1933. We moved into town when I was seven. We skated, played hockey, baseball, and swam in Pelican Lake. Later, playing hockey for Wawanesa in the Tiger Hills League. I taught school for one year and then started working for Wawanesa Insurance Company in accounting August 1952. I married Vickie Sinkler of Brandon in September 1959. Our son Jeff was born July 1960. I was transferred to Executive Accounting in the Winnipeg office in 1962. We moved into our custom built house in the Pulberry area in St. Vital. Gavin was born in April 1964. My sons played hockey, football, and soccer. I coached, managed, and served as President of Norberry Community Club, Baseball and Soccer Chairman. For many years, I volunteered for both Provincial and Federal Conservative political parties during elections. After 38 years at Wawanesa Insurance, I retired and became a member of the Heather Curling Club playing many years and bonspiels in the USA. My wife, Vickie, passed away of Ovarian Cancer in August, 1993. Following her footsteps, I joined the Norwood/Dakota Lawn Bowling Club. In 1996, I met Shirley Penner and she has been my partner ever since.

We love you very much Dad. You fought very hard but lost the battle to infection and two bad heart valves, April 19, 2024. We will miss you very much. Always very kind, helpful, and generous.

Son, Jeff; granddaughter, Karla (Queveen); son, Gavin (Zeenat); granddaughters, Ebrel and Olwen.

  • Glen and our father Merv were childhood friends from Ninette. We got to know Glen over the last several years through his visits with Dad in Maples PCH – Glen would always call with an update and Ninette news following a visit. Both men lived long and full lives and now share the same year of passing. Our condolences to you Shirley and to the whole family. • Every family has a record keeper, the person who remembers all the important dates and names and events. Glen was that person for our family. He was the last living person who knew me from birth 71 years ago. He was the constant, the tether pole we all wandered from but always came back to. I will miss him but never stop remembering him on all those important occasions and dates. My most heartfelt condolences to Shirley, Jeff, Gavin and their families. Rest in peace Uncle Glen.
