LORETTA KINAMORE-OBENG


On the morning of April 23, 2024 Loretta passed away peacefully at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Loretta was born in Athabasca, Alberta on October 14, 1943 to Issac and Doris Kinamore.

She was predeceased by her two sisters, Esther of Los Angeles, CA and Betty of Edmonton, AB.

Loretta leaves to mourn her passing, the love of her life her husband of 41 years, Steve Obeng, daughter Denise, granddaughters, Dominique and Maxine, and great-grandson Eliyahs, all of Toronto, ON, son Terry Jason of Winnipeg, MB, sister Bertha of Edmonton, AB, sister Elsie, brother Wilfred of Vancouver, BC, brother Alfred (Marty) of Winnipeg, MB, sister Gladys of Toronto, ON, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Loretta taught school in various northern communities in Manitoba and Ontario for several years. She was a principal at Julie Lindal School at Ilford, Manitoba (Frontier School Division). Still with the Frontier School Division, she later taught at West Lynn Heights school in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, where she had to take early retirement due to illness in 2007.

She was also instrumental in running the kitchen for the first 10 years of the African pavilion during Winnipeg’s Folklorama. She was also very active in the Ghanaian community in Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, the family request a donation to the CancerCare Manitoba.

  • Laretta saw people for who they were Gave Extremely powerful / soft Immense kindness No person was safe from her understanding and foresight Yet, ewww... for the grossnest, of your feet on the hotel gross carpet in a hotel. Yuck! Tip toe tip toe me too!! Shy, I thought I was strange. We both thought we were shy. Yes, and no. I did the same thing Fell in love with her right there. She/we were already working in Lynn Lake. She was/experienced more than most, then and after. Her heart and soul she shared many times over.   • We are very sad to hear of Loretta’s passing. We have good memories of Steve and Loretta sitting on our deck having drinks and snacks, along with our big grey cat Teddy.
